Mission Monday 4/1 - chance to play Old Barnwell
« on: February 27, 2024, 11:24:51 AM »
I am a big fan of private clubs using access to their course to raise money for good causes. Various people make posts to that end within this DG, and I wholeheartedly support them doing so. For instance, my friend RVS annually posts one regarding playing Eastward Ho! with the proceeds going to a local church. To me, everyone wins.

Same with today’s offering from Old Barnwell for play there on April 1st in line with the mission-based nature of the club. Here is the link and the cause is the Evans Scholars Foundation that provides over 1,100 students with full tuition and housing scholarships at 24 partner universities.

If you are free this coming Easter Monday, this is a great way to play Old Barnwell, one of the best courses built this century IMO, and generate money to help build their youth caddie program at the club, and work towards establishing a Scholarship House at University of South Carolina.

Best,

Ran,

I certainly don’t want to hijack this thread, but there is one perspective on Old Barnwell that I think is worth mentioning.

To the best of my knowledge, most members joined because of the vision Nick Schreiber communicated and this was well before anyone realized how well the golf course would turn out.

I did see the property after most of the clearing had been completed, but still haven’t actually seen the finished products.

It would be great to meet a few GCA board members at this event.

Thanks for sharing Ran. This club has an admirable vision and a highly original golf course that is fun to play. It is worth a long trip to play. Holes 3,4,8,16, and 18 are among the best modern holes that I have seen in the last thirty years. The site is both serene and expansive. The golf holes at Old Barnwell flow seamlessly over lovely terrain with a distinct Southern sense of place.

Thanks for posting this, Ran.

I think that's the same thing I paid to play Oakmont for the first time 15-20 years ago. A great day where I made friends I still keep up with and supported a good cause. This looks like a great opportunity.

John,

I plan to play. It would be nice to meet some GCA folks.

If you can make this one, I urge you not to pass it up.  OB is amazing in so many aspects, and this is certainly a good cause.

I'm going to prod my friends in Atlanta to come up if they can, they've heard me talking incessantly about the place for months now.

Mark,

I can’t speak for Nick Schreiber, but this is certainly consistent with his intentions for Old Barnwell.

I just checked out the OB webiste, and unaccompanied guest play is allowed 4/6-4/15!From the site:

 April Access
Old Barnwell will allow limited public play Saturday, April 6, 2024 – Monday, April 15, 2024. Unaccompanied guest tee times will be available at $2,000 (+ tax) per tee time ($500/person), will include greens fees and lunch, and will help subsidize our mission programming at Old Barnwell. If you are interested in securing a tee time during that time frame, all inquiries must be directed to Kitty Nicastro, Head Professional (kitty@oldbarnwell.com).

So much golf to play, so little time....

Mark -- Interesting set of holes you chose here. 4, 8, and 16 I can understand. I'm genuinely curious what about 3 / 18 lead to your comment? I would've expected 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, for example, ahead of 3/18. FWIW -- I don't think there are really any bad holes on the course (though I'm biased as a member there), but now I'm curious if I'm missing something on 3 and 18 that I should pay more attention to next time.
