Aerial of the Day #451 - 9 Dec 2003
« on: December 09, 2003, 09:46:01 AM »
The first part of the name of this course could quite possibly
be the most misnamed course inthe U.S., given the
location/state it's in.  The 2nd part of the name is very apt,
given what's seen in the aerials and the state it's in.

With a state max elevation of 345 feet, there's no way this
course should have a name resembling even a molehill.

Last AOTD in this architectureal lineage (entire course, that is).

First syllable of this state's name is mispronounced by the
entire northeast (just an observation - there are, of course,
exceptions).

Water features involved in half the name.

Orange groves, perhaps?  Or some kind of citrus trees....

Was this the filming location for most of Dirty Dancing?

Mont Loch  (mixing languages.  "you're mixing your centuries"  Name that movie)

Restoration done recently by an expert on the matter.

This is a great spot. I'd love to see it now
that the restoration is complete.
That bunker on the par 3 in the lower right is
the deepest I've seen on this ubiquitous hole.

Its a real sporty course. Very short but long on fun.
magnificent clubhouse.

Looks like this aerial was pre-restoration.

Scott - Not a misnomer in a relative sense. If
you'd expand the aerial a bit you could capture
the highest point in the state, and the characteristic
structure that sits atop it.

Surprisingly, this course has more up and down then
some of the others by the the arch.

Sean,

The highest point in the state is up in the panhandle, near
the AL border, NE of Crestview. (check out yer handy-dandy
Rand McNally), unless some monstrous landfill has been made
near this course in recent times.

I think the aerial is 1994 or thereabouts.

The "large ponds" down there are alarmingly circular.  Kinda
like craters or like previous AOTD in this state, Dunes@Seville
with the bombing range blowouts.

Pike's Peak Pond CC?

"Mississippi Queen" group Lac?

Scott -
No self respecting Floridian would consider East Panhandle, part of Florida, its a contiguous Redneck State, over which FL has sovereignty merely for purposes of locating its capitol. I think if you check the records you will see that the FL only has a prescriptive use right of panhandle, it is legally AL land. AL wants to make sure that if the redneck quotient ever gets to a fever pitch, that they would publicly reassert their ownership of the panhandle. Based on current conditions, I think you will see begin public acknowledgment of this in the near future. Most maps get it wrong, but the ones that get it right are rare.  ;D

In some of the old photos of this course I have seen, the bunkers had a very interesting non-angular outline. In particular what is the 8th green now, the bunker guarding the green had a free form outline that appeared to run right into the lake.

Sean,

Your reasoning is like the NorCal folks thinking that the
highest point in CA is Mt. Shasta.

Or like NYC residents thinking that they live in the state capital.

Or like NC tourism industry folks making a big deal of Mt.
Mitchell being the highest point in the country - east of the Mississippi.

This timeless illustration has always adequately
conveyed how most New Yorkers view their
city in relation to the state (i.e. that region
north of 96th St.), the country and the world.

A [sic] after "state" would have gotten the message across -
which is what I figured anyways.  I thought you were
questioning the spelling of "capital".

Yes, 'capitol' is a building.

Dan Kelly caught me in a spelling mistake recently.  I used:
"ad nauseum", and I thought it correct.  It's "ad nauseam".
Most spelling mistakes in my posts are tyops.  I even caught
a "their" in a post of mine (yesterday, I think) that should
have been "they're".  Had to correct it.   ::)

That's a good policy.

I have a similar ones. Most logical errors in my post are Pat's fault.

This is Mountain Lake, in Lake Wales, FL, designed by Seth
Raynor.  Restored by Brian Silva.  Among it's accolades (for
those who don't think that private clubs don't care about the
rankings, this is straight from ML's web site):

http://www.mountainlakecc.com/club/scripts/view/view_pubnews.asp?GRP=&pg=home&NS=&PID=2638&APP=57

the course guide w/pics is here:

http://www.mountainlakecc.com/club/scripts/view/view_insert.asp?grp=&pg=home&IID=2779&NS=&APP=106

from the main site:

http://www.mountainlakecc.com/Club/Scripts/Home/home.asp

other clues include:

"The first part of the name of this course could quite possibly
be the most misnamed course inthe U.S., given the
location/state it's in." = Mountain.  Their ain't no mountains in
FL, of which the max elevation is 345 feet.

"The 2nd part of the name is very apt, given what's seen in
the aerials and the state it's in." = "Lake"

"Nobody puts Baby in the corner." is a quote near the end
of "Dirty Dancing", which was filmed mostly at "Mountain Lake"
Resort near Blacksburg, VA.

"With a state max elevation of 345 feet, there's no way this
course should have a name resembling even a molehill." = "mountains" out of "molehills".

Last AOTD in this architectureal lineage (entire course, that
is). = Raynor/CBMac/Banks.  One hole later this week is from this lineage.

First syllable of this state's name is mispronounced by the
entire northeast (just an observation - there are, of course,
exceptions). = "Florida", of which seemingly everyone from
the NE pronounces the first syllable like "car".  It's
pronounced like "floor" or "florist".  Again, just an observation.  :-*

Water features involved in half the name = "lake"

"(Geological feature) (geological feature)" = "mountain" "lake"

"Mont Loch"  (mixing languages.) = French and Scottish
for "Mountain Lake"  "you're mixing your centuries"  Name that
movie) = Risky Business when they're putting the
China/porcelain cabinet back together in a hurry.

Restoration done recently by an expert on the matter. = Silva.

"and the characteristic structure that sits atop it. " = this, perhaps?:

Bok Tower:

"large ponds"  = "lakes"

Pike's Peak Pond CC?  ="Mountain" "Lake"

"Mississippi Queen" group Lac? = "Mountain" "Lake"
