LACC - 2023 US Open
« on: June 08, 2023, 07:37:24 AM »
Hi

This has been rather quiet on GCA which is surprising as the US Open is just around the corner and I have seen a number of very good videos regarding LACC for the US Open.

Have been reading Golf Architecture in America and it is quite relevant today even though it was written in 1927. George Thomas was a forward thinking GCA and his knowledge of building golf courses is very clever.

Here are some You Tube movies for LACC which I am excited to see how the top players play it as it is not the conventional US Open course.

Ditto - I am counting up the days. Interesting that the Thomas LA trio starts with a par 5! plus LACC is partly a Herbert Fowler layout which Thomas modified.

Thank you, Ben.

I enjoyed the GD version because the drone angle seemed to simultaneously give me the field of the contrast in fairway topography, yet also give a sense of the extent to which to bunkers eat into portions of the greens.

For someone who has not, and probably never will, get the privilege of playing there, I think they got the angle just right.  It will be a heck of a challenge for the game's best.

Looking at yardage book info, I’m curious on how many real “choices” off the tee there are at this level

Assuming firm and fast there are a few of holes that look like slopes will create a lot of divot Farms in fairways??

I do t know the course well enough so asking, not stating.
Surprised at width of some fairways too. 18 is over 50 yards wide at about 300!

I am extremally interested in how many of my favorite holes will play - 3, 6, 8, 13, & 15.  I've never gone into a US Open with less of an idea of how the pros will handle the course than I have with this one although I have played this course more than most other Open sites.

Forget fast and firm--we have had the thickest marine layer over the last four weeks that I have seen since 2012.  Add to the fact we had quite the rainy season (well north of two feet), LACC won't run anywhere as fast and firm as it did for the 2017 Walker Cup.The marine layer looks like it will malinger well into next week.  It will be somewhat a reprise of what we saw weather-wise at Torrey Pines in 2021 and, more specifically, that seen at Pebble Beach in 2019.
Somehow, I don't believe this is what the USGA had in mind when coming to Los Angeles in June.  Thank your lucky stars what HD cameras can do to brighten up what's going on in reality.
As a So-Cal resident, it's quite remarkable we're about to host the US Open for the first time in 75 years and, yet, there's virtually no discussion of the event whatsoever locally.  At least this tournament will be run far more professionally than the last major we hosted here in 1995, where the PGA of America failed epically inside and outside the ropes.I'd go with 271 to 273 to win next week.  I hope the USGA doesn't set up no. 15 less than 100 yards in either the third or fourth round.

Peter,

Great insights on the weather.  Its certainly been a wet winter and spring everywhere out West, even here in Utah where we are desperate for more moisture. Is the rough at least lush to make up for lack of fast and firm?

P.S.   Are you sure the San Diego area isn't considered So Cal when it comes to hosting a Open? ;D

I'll be volunteering Wednesday and Saturday and will probably pop by a few of the other days.

I can definitely echo the sentiments on the weather, the marine layer has been thick here and I'm 2 miles west of LACC. Expect the sun to come out at 4p each day and given our wet winter, the course to be very green.

I will be on site Tuesday and Wednesday. Since cameras are ok for practice rounds, I hope get a few good photos for my first US Open experience. It looks like 60s early in the week and warming to 90 by Sunday.

It hasn't even been doing that most days this month.

Also, yes San Diego is part of Southern California but that slips our mind quite often in the Los Angeles area.

I agree. While I’ve only played LACC once, it was a few months ago and I left this wonderful layout thinking they will either kill it or it will kill them. I’m looking forward to watching it, as i may only watch USGA events and the Open in light of this week’s proposed merger.

I have wanted to see the course in person since the televised 2017 Walker Cup, and will happen to be in LA on Saturday--alas with other obligations.

Whatever the weather turns out to be (San Diego area resident here), the US Open would have cured my seasonal affective disorder. According to the local paper, SD hasn’t had a completely sunny day since Feb 15.

Good work on sharing these videos Ben - plenty to look forward to. Given the opposition of the players to rolling back the ball it will be interesting to see if there are any complaints about the longer par 3s this week!

The Murray piece is interesting as a time capsule. The “art” of the “stars” is unwatchable, unlistenable and, in the case of Murray, unreadable today. (Correct, I am underwhelmed by mainstream celebrities.) I would rather meet GCAers there, even if they decline to autograph my program.

I recall reading his stuff when I was younger...and enjoying it.  While I wouldn't necessarily say this piece hasn't aged well, its all name-dropping pizzaz and no substance.

However, one tid-bit certainly hasn't seemed to change, high end clubs being stocked with old dinosaurs in constant need of youth.

Back to LACC architecture, do any of you that are familiar with the restoration or how the course plays for the members know why the barrancas that border the driving areas are thinned out with many bare patches. It looks from what I have seen on TV that the barrancas bordering the driving areas have many thinned out or bare areas that might give the pros decent shots at the greens if they hit into a barranca with a drive or short of some greens. My experience with barrancas as a Cali golfers has been that if you hit into one your not likely hitting out but taking a penalty shot. At LACC I see that the barrancas in front of the tees are overgrown and unplayable like I am familiar with but the pros will never hit it there.
Earlier last month when the LPGA played Wilshire it seemed like the barrancas there were very penalizing. Did the club clear out the barrancas in driving areas so members wouldn't lose so many balls or is that what the barrancas looked like when the course was built? ???
