Recommendation for North/West of LA
« on: May 08, 2023, 03:06:59 PM »
I'll be out in Pasadena for meetings May 9-11. Have the Friday 12th  free.. My reciprocal (Valley Club)  has a Women's member/guest on that day and there's nothing available at Rustic Canyon until 2;30pm which would cause me to miss my flight home.

Anything else worth a round?

Access threads are prohibited or should at least be marked OT. Looks like you are less than 10 miles from Santa Anita. I could be wrong because that sounds too good to be true.

Olivas Links in Ventura and Soule Park in Ojai are options, but might be a longer drive than you want to make.

These would be my suggestions as well, Soule in particular is sublime. It's a solid 90 minute drive from Pasadena but worth it.

Olivas Links probably has not recovered from the winter flooding.  Two weeks ago we had the senior club from there playing behind us at Soule Park.  Soule Park is great fun and is hosting US Senior Open Q and State Am Q on Monday and Tuesday next week, and course is in great shape.  Being a Friday, give yourself 3 plus hours for LAX because traffic can be parking lot speed from the San Fernando Valley to airport.
Being in Pasadena, both Brookside courses have great architectural bones.  They were part of the Tillie and Bell partnership.  Santa Anita is really cool and usually has a very good pace of play

I've only played it once, but Alhambra is sorta fun and not far from Pasadena. Only 5400 yards and par 71. I found some of the greens interesting and difficult to read.

If you were able to get a reciprocal at The Valley Club, try for Annandale which is near the Rose Bowl. Terrific. San Gabriel is fun too.

I thought the same thing about Annandale. It's a little cramped in places but lots of variety and a lot tougher than its yardage suggests. Many greens with uphill approaches and false fronts. Plenty of bunkers. A few tough climbs. Canyon holes are memorable. Definitely worth trying to see.

My favorite in that area is about 20 mins up the 210 from Pasadena and that's the Jack Nicklaus design Angeles National in Sunland. Very challenging canyon design with barrancas and scrub similar to Rustic.
Also if you can get access then Oakmont CC in Glendale is close too. A 1922 Max Behr design that has been renovated by Brian Curley in 2008. Their website has a great history on it including professional tourny's played there.
La Canada Flintridge CC is close too and is a 1962 design that has great views of LA and the Valley. Hilly and tight it's fun to play and accepts reciprocal play.
Brookside is a 5 1/2 hour round on a Friday.

That’s pretty funny coming from the guy that just came right out and asked someone/anyone to host him in St. Louis this week.
