Thanks for posting and the great memories; my round at Stonehaven in 1999, in the dying light of a late summer day, was one of the highlights of my trip to Scotland. I still proudly wear my Stonehaven hat on the golf course. Hitler's Bunker, Braid's ingenius design on 60s-some acres, and those terrific par 3s made for a great round.

This is what I sent to Rich , when he was looking for some Archie Simpson info.
 
""Stonehaven acquired some more land to extend the course in 1896 , and it was decided to get Professional help with the layout , so they contacted Archie Simpson who was Pro. at Royal Aberdeen at the time. The work was done by the Stonehaven Cricket Club Professional under his Supervision !
 
In 1900 , Stonehaven looking for a Professional turned to Mr. Simpson again , and he recommended George Duncan . This was the future Open Champion and Ryder Cup Captain's first Professional job , but he only lasted "one season" , as he was expected also to do some greenkeeping which he didn't enjoy .
 
In 1903 , Stonehaven acquired another piece of land , and again it was Archie Simpson that they turned to plan the course .
 
In 1906 , a local announced that he was to put up a purse of £5 , for an exhibition match between the Open Champion James Braid and Archie Simpson . Played over 36 holes , Simpson beat Braid 73 to 75 in the morning , but lost the afternoon match 73 to 74 .
 
The local press said that Simpson's style "was of that forceable quality that met with its reward on a course like Stonehaven , while Braid's play gave one the impression of considerable reserve of force which only occasionally required to be called forth" .
 
After the match the committee met with the two Professionals to discuss improvements to the course , and Archie Simpson was employed , at a fee of £2 , to advise on how to carry out their suggestions .""

Our group certainly enjoyed the day at Stonehaven.  None of us knew what to expect, but all were pleasantly surprised.  Stonehaven is a very welcoming place and at a fair price.  The only thing we missed was the holes beyond the rr tracks on the second go and Brian.  Don't you come out to greet all visitors?

I have always thought that its important to sneak in a day or two on the less heralded courses while on tour.  They are often a welcome break from the tourista trail of £100 brutal tests and bit lower key.  Plus, I can't think of a single of these courses which didn't didn't yield a surprise or two.  One could probably come up with a list of 18 great holes from courses in Scotland that don't grab headlines that is every bit the quality of the 18 best from the big guns.

I'll start us off: 13th at Royal Tarlair

To keep on topic, I'll just say that I haven't played Stonehaven since I was a skinny junior. On that day, the wind blew so hard that I almost ended up over the cliff on the 2nd tee.

If one goes to www.youtube.com and searches for Hidden Links, you will find video clips ranging from 1 to 6 minutes on 25-30 golf courses in Scotland & Ireland. What a great way to waste an afternoon!

Ahh... But Sean, A man of your wide travels has played enough courses to come up with one or two spectacular holes... I don't need the whole eighteen... Others can help there

A few years ago, they changed the order of holes, to try and improve flow.

So, you now play the Gully holes on the front 9.

Never understood it myself, but it seems to have been accepted by the membership.

Apart from that, not much else has changed.
