The avoidance of hurly-burly (a bit Devils Advocatie)
« on: April 17, 2023, 08:32:00 AM »
Being somewhat Devils Advocate like here.

Golf courses can be wonderful places to get away from the hurly-burly of the outside world with playing golf seemingly being more enjoyable when there aren't many other players let alone hustle and bustle and infrastructure etc around. When it's quiet and peaceful and tranquil and serene. When there isn't noise from the next fairway. When the birds and the insects can be heard.

Isn't this in direct contrast to the grow the game position which seems to have invaded even some private members clubs, private members clubs which perhaps would be expected to be the very cradle of quiet, peaceful, tranquil and serene golf yet which have yielded to the temptation of allowing hurly-burly onto the premises?

This is a great subject, because there is a tension between the two forces.

As a player who hasn't played a whole lot for a while now (and who likes the quiet tranquility and needs affordability), I am best served by more and emptier courses. But I also want the industry people (pros, architects, course operators etc.) to thrive and be able to work at what they love to do.

If I can hear your music when I am on the tee and you are on the green it is hurly burly -- I don't hate music on the golf course but I hate your taste in music

I unfairly disparaged Shania Twain last week after a reasonably poor three wood. It made me feel like a woman. Didn’t impress me much.

I’ll be out east this year for some golf. We need to get together for a Bud Light.

I love music, and I love golf. I don’t love music while I golf.

In a tournament ent this past Saturday at my club, I won a closest to the pin on a par 3; the prize happened to be a blue tooth speaker designed to fit in a golf cart cup holder.  Double whammy for me; in addition to wanting to hear sounds like birds singing, the wind in the trees, clubs coming in and out of golf bags, and so on instead of music, I only ride anyway when I’m required to anyway.

Happy ending, though!  One of the other closest to the pin prizes was a Theragun Mini, won by a MUCH younger guy who not only DOES like music on the course, but also already had a Theragun.

We swapped, and this 70 yr old curmudgeon now has a Theragun to help him recover and do stress reduction after hearing music on the golf course.

Why do old men hate everything new. Why are they always right?

I’m currently only harming myself by refusing to sign up for Golf Genius because it violates my rights under the American with Disabilities Act. I can’t be forced to look at my phone after every hole. What an idiot I must make myself to be.

Thomas,

I get your point, but from the perspective of the vast majority of actual golfers who play busy public courses, I doubt this would ever be the expectation. The only exception I've found to this is playing in crap weather...

But for a very tiny slice of the population who either lives and/or plays remotely or are in position to sign up at very exclusive clubs with low membership totals, I guess it could be.

I don't think that's the only way to experience it. Granted I grew up in one of those remote areas that was extremely rich in golf courses, but when I moved to the big city, I only had to drive from the central city out to the exurbs to have that kind of experience. Now those places were just as packed as the city on a weekend morning or right after work, but the experience was available to me and I was never a member of any club, exclusive or otherwise. If I didn't want to drive 30+ minutes, it would be more crowded, and that was fine too.

I recently moved to a relatively course-poor area, so we'll see how it goes from now on, what with wanting to start playing more again.

It's kind of curious that music has made such an appearance in the conversation, I read "quiet" as "not busy" rather than actually referring to the number of decibels.

I appreciate the topic here.  As a person living in Manhattan for the past few years, I definitely have a new appreciation for the notions of "quiet" or "solitude".

Even the crowded munis here are a modest retreat from the city's thunder.  A respite is a respite.

Yacht Rock should not be blasted before noon. The sudden switch from Christopher Cross’s Lithium like melody to Shania’s Viagraesque vocals threw me out of rhythm. She isn’t even ranked.

Further off topic - "Viagraesque" is a phrase I may borrow from time to time, when appropriate.

The only one on the list I didn’t remember was the Bobby Goldsboro song. It hurts to get old. ;D

Never heard of yacht rock until a few weeks ago. I know the music, its lame, but harmless I guess. I would prefer to avoid it.

Agreed regarding music, but my club's course is urban and adjacent to heavily used freight train tracks (with a crossing just off the course -- so three horn blasts from every train) and across the street from a junk yard that crushes cars on occasion.  Add to that police and fire truck sirens and the police helicopter route overhead.  Maybe music would help.  I don't know.

I love to grab my bag about 90 minutes before sunset and play a seven-hole loop at my club. I usually don't run into anyone; if I do, I jump over to a different hole. It is some of my favorite golf.
