OT - All "Hale" Bernie Langer!
« on: February 19, 2023, 07:34:57 PM »
65-year old Bernhard Langer has won his 45th tournament on the Champion/senior tour, tying Hale Irwin for the most wins ever. My guess is he has got a few more wins in him.

Much respect.

Langer isn't as prolific as Jack or Tiger, nowhere near as charismatic as Arnie or Seve (my personal favorite) but the man is simply incredible. The fact that he's winning on the senior circuit at age 65 in incredible, and that he's won as much as he has on the Euro, American, Asia, Japan, Australian and South American tours is proof positive that he took his game to the 4 corners of the Earth to compete.

But what I find most incredible is that he's achieved all of this while overcoming 3 debilitating cases of the yips. He's Superman, in may book.

Remarkable example of what physical fitness and commitment to your craft can achieve.

Time to get back on my own daily fitness routine that has been dormant since December as I know it's the reason my game is rapidly deteriorating at Langer's age.

Do they do drug testing on the Champions Tour too?  I mean the guy hasn't aged a bit in the last 15 years...something fishy gotta be going on!  ;D

An amazing achievement indeed, congrats Bernie!

Incredible work ethic and preparation.

In the champions events I played in
He (and his caddy), spent more time working and prepping at the event than anyone.

I thought I spent time trying to learn every nook and cranny. He was relentless

You can easily make the case that no one has ever shown more mental toughness in playing the game.

A very classy gentleman.

At the US Senior Opens I worked his caddie was out there before practice rounds and after them checking and double checking his numbers.

I got so sick of idiots who called the USGA and said that Langer was anchoring when every official I know checked out what he did and were ok with it.  In addition he seems to be a man of impeccable integrity and if he says he isn’t I’m going to believe him.

I don't think there is any aspect of his game that is brilliant or even notable. If you were watching the tour guys hitting balls on the range, I doubt you would even stop for more than a few seconds to admire his swing.

All the guy does is shoot low scores and win tournaments. Golf is funny that way. :)

Getting this back to GCA, Langer has "designed" some golf courses in Germany. Has anyone played one and if he ever retires does GCA take up his time like Nicklaus or Crenshaw?

He's the designer of record of Portmarnock Links, located just north of Dublin. I've played it maybe half dozen times but as I sit here I can't for the life of me remember one hole. More an indictment on my memory than the course, I'm sure.

And I can't imagine why or when Langer would ever retire.

You mean Stan Eby's design, for which Bernhardt was paid a pile of cash to act as hype man?

Adam -

I was basing my comment on the article posted on your website! ;)

"Portmarnock Links was originally designed by two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer in 1995 on the shoreline of a rugged peninsula and is spread across 203 acres that was previously the Jameson Estate of St Marnocks."

No mention of Stan Eby at all.

What about DLIII in 1997?  Or had he moved to metal by then?

Bernie does it AGAIN! Wins his 46th senior tournament (a record) and his 12th senior major (also a record). Needless to say, at 65 years and 10 months, he is again the oldest to win a senior event.

https://www.skysports.com/golf/news/12176/12913495/us-senior-open-bernhard-langer-breaks-pga-tour-champions-record-after-12th-senior-major-title

Some times I can't help but think he is the only guy out there who really wants to play well and win these tournaments. Or at least he is the only guy willing to work hard enough to do so.
