Seven Canyons ( Weiskopf) in Sedona, AZ
« on: October 24, 2023, 05:10:58 PM »
Herd of Javelina absolutely massacre top-25 Arizona golf course
It seems like practically every day we get news of some hotshot destroying a golf course with their pickup truck. This year alone we saw an entire dirt bike crew tear through a Delaware course in broad daylight and a Champions Tour venue vandalized 36 hours before the tournament was scheduled to begin. It’s getting worse and worse out there—boredom is rampant, crime is a viral trend now, yadda yadda yadda—but the man-made destruction can’t hold a candle to what’s been happening at this top Arizona golf course. If you’re sensitive to graphic golf gore, now’s the time to look away.
That was the scene at Seven Canyons Golf Club in Sedona as captured by superintendent Em Casey on Sunday morning. But it wasn’t humans or weather or some sort of extraterrestrial blight that caused this — it was a pack of adorable boar-like animals called javelinas.

Wow.

A couple of Javelinas were major players in one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I was visiting a store of mine (a couple decades ago) that was in the Anthem Outlet Mall. I went into the store before hours and I saw a couple of Javelinas loitering outside the store. I called security to alert them to what was going on because, well, these creatures look really mean. About 5 minutes later, a security guard who must have tipped the scales north of 300 lbs, came into the picture and proceeded to chase them off the property. He was out of view for maybe 30 seconds and the next vision of him was running as fast as he could (not very) and about 5 seconds later, the Javelinas zipped by, in hot pursuit of the security guard. Curiosity, and common decency, took me outside to check on the guy's wellbeing. He'd managed to climb up on a bench, out of harm's way. Another call was placed to the security office and by the time a couple other guys arrived, the pair of Javelinas apparently go bored and left.

No offense to 7 Canyons, but I'd put it in the bottom 25.

I played Seven Canyons last month on a perfect weather day.  It's one of the most beautiful courses I've played.  But I can't believe it's ranked top 25 in the state.

I have it tied with Spanish Bay as worst courses on best sites that I've played. It's not a complaint .. they're both beautiful .. they're just bad courses.

 8)  Reminds me of:

1) the Wilderness course (Jeff Brauer) in Lake Jackson, TX, asked the supt about the barbed wire seen on a couple of holes and he said the third ring did the trick keeping the feral hogs from rooting around on course...

2) at Blaketree National (C&C first 12, Mr Blake last 6) before it became Bluejack (T. Woods) the 8th hole got quite torn up by the hogs, but they took a more direct approach and let folks rent the cabins and go golfing & hunting.

Courses in the western mountains have to learn to live with elk damage.  Especially in the fall when they are mating. It’s is, what it is. Just play the damaged areas as ground under repair and move on. Golf must coexist with nature.

The Club at Seven Canyons in Sedona, Arizona, will reopen its renovated golf course in April.
The Tom Weiskopf-designed layout has been revamped by Phil Smith, who was part of Weiskopf’s design team for its original construction in 2002.
Under new ownership since 2022, the club brought in Smith to develop a renovation masterplan. Work completed includes re-sequencing holes, leveling tees and rebunkering.

Nice picture, Stewart.  I was playing the back nine at Talking Rock Golf Club (outside Prescott, AZ) a few years ago and hit an approach shot over the 12th green.  When I walked over the green to play a chip shot, I met one of the dominant male javelina.  Javelina do generally travel in groups of 10-20, and often have a dominant male in front and back of the group.

After walking halfway back to my cart, I incorrectly assumed the herd would have left the area.  Mr Javelina had an attitude as he escorted me toward the next hole.

I'm not going to pass judgement on the golf courses, but I do take exception to the foul-smelling, incredibly ugly beasts being called "adorable."
I may be wrong but I believe that the pig-like creatures are actually large rodents.  (I checked on it—and they are not rodents.  But they aren’t pigs either.  They are peccaries.)
