When she was in her prime, my wife and I followed her at the LPGA championship held for a few years at Pine Ridge GC outside Baltimore. She could really play.

I remember watching win the Ping Team Champiosnhip 3 times between 1978 and 1981 with Donna Capoini.  Unlike the PGA Tour which counts four-ball or foursomes tournaments as official wins, the LPGA does not or else she’d have 92 wins (she won another LPGA four-ball earlier).

She was definitely one of, if not the, best ever.

Another golfing legend passess

Can anyone explain why her 1977 win in the NDS doesn't count as a "Major"?

Because 1983 was the first time it was a major.

Yes but why?

The NDS tournament started play in 1972. Why did it have to wait 12 years to become a Major? It wasn't like there were more than 4 Women's Majors already available in 1972?

Why did the U.S. Am stop being called a major? Why was the Evian elevated to a major? When did the Women's British Open become one?

In 1972 it was a 54-hole event. I'm not sure how long that lasted, but that might be one of the reasons it took awhile. It was established as a 54-hole non-major, so even if it switched to 72 holes pretty quickly, the reputation might have persisted for awhile.

There were three "majors" on the LPGA Tour in 1982: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_LPGA_Tour. The LPGA Championship, the USWO, and the Peter Jackson Classic played in Canada (who knew?).
