Five Par 5's and Five Par 3's
« on: December 06, 2022, 04:57:41 PM »
Played a course recently with five par 5's and 5 par 3's. Not sure I have ever seen that before. I loved the course just thought it was odd considering one of the par 5's was pretty straight forward and short. Could easily been set up as a long par 4. Anyone know of other courses with this arrangement?

Primland. A really great and unusual course that is very remote and now very expensive.

The front is 5-3-5-3-4-5-4-3-4. The back has three bunker less holes in a row (a 5, 3, and 4). Plus it is built on the top of the ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wild contours and spectacular views.

Carne Wild Atlantic Dunes…. Although I’m toying with reducing the overall length of the course by reducing one par-5 to a long par-4.

Of course, Berkshire Red has six fives, six fours, and six threes.

Not exact; Cobblestone, a very nice Ken Dye course outside Atlanta, has four par 5's and five par 3's (not too out of the ordinary), but the front nine is three par 5's, three par 3's and three par 4's.  Sequence is 5-4-3-4-3-4-5-3-5.

The coures features great variety...two drivable par 4's, two par 4's over 460 yds and the par 3's range from 133 yds to 240 yds.

The North course at The Reserve Vineyards (Aloha, OR) by Bob Cupp is my home course. Par 5s are 1,6,8,12,18. Par 3s are 3,5,11,14,16. Par 37-35 (or 35-37) would seem to be the standard. Mentally am surprised at the turn because my score seems a bit high, and happy at the end because I scored better than the front. Then, duh!

Rustic Canyon has 5 par 3's and 5 par 5's. Like was mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the front 9 has 3 par 3's, 3 par 4's, 3 par 5's. Rustic interestingly also has 3 short par 4's

Sand Valley, a fine Coore & Crenshaw course in Wisconsin, has that breakdown.  I wrote a profile which Mr. Morrissett was kind enough to post on this site.

The 5's and 3's really run the gamut of lengths and directions so it's a treat to play.

Idlewild CC in Flossmoor Illinois circa 1908. Small greens, interesting routing,  Ill advised tree planting in the 80's and some amateur changes but it remains a lot of fun and a great candidate for a modest renovation.  Within walking distance of Olympia Fields and Flossmoor.

Town & Country in St. Paul has 5 3's and 5 5's. The sequence of par is pretty wild!:

4-3-3-5-4-4-4-4-4=36
4-3-5-4-3-5-5-5-3=36

My feeling is that great par-4s are the backbone of a great course.

I agree. But if there are going to be more than a few par 5s, they need to be something special. I think the six 5s at Berkshire Red is massive overkill and the course suffers for it. They aren't varied enough to be warranted.

Many a par-4 is in reality even from a forward tee a par-5 when a player doesn’t hit the ball very far. One of the hassles of becoming an older golfer. Same with longer par-3’s.

Providence CC has three p3s on the front and three p5s on the back so it’s 35+37=72. While the 3s look different and point in different directions, on a mild day four of them play within one club difference of each other. And the par 5s are pretty much all three shot holes with a mundane layup second shot.

Given the love it's given on this site I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Lawsonia Links.  From the "who cares" category, there the RTJ II designed Rainmakers in New Mexico.  Forest Highlands (Canyon) comes close to matching Berkshire Red, with 5 par 5s and 6 par 3s.

Awarii Dunes in Axtell Nebraska has 5 of each.  Good variety on both the par 5s and 3s.

Wykagyl has 5 par 5s and 5 par 3s. Makes for a fun match play course, in my opinion. Lots of birdies out there.

The 10-hole stretch from hole 4 through hole 13 has 4 par 5s, 4 par 3s and only 2 par 4s.

Five par 5s and five par 3s is not as uncommon as one might think.  Jack Nicklaus seems to be a big proponent of the idea.  Here's a list:

Nicklaus
Challenge at Manele
Desert Mountain Apache
Desert Mountain Cochise
Desert Mountain Renegade
Reserve at Moonlight Basin
Sherwood
Superstition Mountain Lost Gold

Weiskopf
Chapparal Pines
Lahontan
Yellowstone Club

Others
Club at Black Rock (Jim Engh)
Diamante Dunes (Davis Love III)
Pumpkin Ridge Witch Hollow (Bob Cupp)

Landmand and Blessings also both have five par 5s, but with only four par 3s they come in as rare par 73s.

With the exception of Pumpkin Ridge, the common thread here seems to be challenging sites, whether desert or severe elevation changes.
