I think you are both mistaken.  From my experience, most shots out of iceplant tend to go backwards rather than forwards.  Therefore, the proper way to play the shot is aim 180 degrees from the hole swing as hard as you can and then watch your opponent's jaw drop as your ball flies up backwards and lands softly on the green!

Rich:

You always were sort of a backward Indian but I admire your imagination and ingenuity for thinking to hit a ball out of iceplants in the opposite direction from the hole and expect it to pop out backwards!

Watch out who you're playing with when you do that though, as they might find a way to penalize you. I'd expect they'd use something like the wording in the exceptions found in some of the relief procedures;

".....use of an unnecessarily abnormal stance, swing or direction of play".

And of course if I was playing with you I'd expect them to penalize me too under Rule 30-3f for being "on or close to and extension of your line of play......"

I taped the episode myself and watched it last night...boy!...does that place "feel" claustraphobic!!!  Especially when you consider the small corridors the fans/patrons/observers gave the players to play through.

My impressions of the course (having NEVER been there and seeing it on a 2-D TV screen) are that there is a TON of movement (both left to right & up and down in those fairways and greens, bunkering looks pretty tough, and the greens appeared to be some fairly small targets, given their surrounds.  Positioning off the tee appeared to be critical to scoring, as well as keeping the balls below the holes on the greens.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first ever "tour" of Olympic...hope to get the chance to see it in person one of these years!  :o 8)
