The course is owned by  Maricopa County and the current operator wants out. The course will be closed indefinitely  pending a search by the county for a new operator.  This is the second course in the area to close as Falcon GC ( Schmidt,Curley-1997) closed after a sale to a developer. Both courses provided golf at reasonable rates,

Tres Rios — originally "Estrella Golf Course" — is a Red Lawrence (Robert F. "Red" Lawrence, ASGCA) design c. 1962. One of Phoenix's earliest muni courses. Opened the year before Papago (Wm F. Bell). I doubt that Jeff Hardin or Greg Nash were involved — perhaps Jeff as he was older and may have known Red at that time. Red was one of the Founding Members of ASGCA, and worked along side William Flynn for several years before moving West and starting his own firm.

Sad but not surprising.  The course would never be on anyone’s top list.  Sadly, it has not been maintained to even a minimal standard.  I have always thought it had good “bones” and could use some serious love.  The back nine in particular has some very good holes, and the greens are well designed and challenging.  Unfortunately, the “bones” are pretty well camoflaged.
