Bandon Eclectic
« on: September 07, 2022, 06:15:20 PM »
I am sure that this has been done before, but we just came back from our second trip so I figured I would put mine out there.

1 Sheep Ranch
2 Bandon Trails
3 Old Mac
4 Bandon Trails
5 Bandon Dunes
6 Bandon Preserve
7 Old Mac
8 Sheep Ranch
9 Bandon Trails
10 Bandon Dunes
11 Pacific Dunes
12 Pacific Dunes
13 Pacific Dunes
14 Bandon Trails
15 Bandon Trails
16 Pacific Dunes
17 Pacific Dunes
18 Old Mac

Numbers 4, 6, 12, and 16 were the toughest calls even though 16 at Pac Dunes is one of my favorite holes anywhere. Number 7 was the easiest despite how good some of them are at the other courses.

Sheep Ranch #8 must be really really good to push Pac Dunes #8 aside.

Easiest one on my list would be #13 at Pacific Dunes, a masterpiece's defining brushstroke.

What are the criteria for "eclectic", Ira, if you don't mind me asking.

Heading to Bandon in a week and a half and wanting to use your criteria to cross compare when I get back, thanks.

Ira:

Were you trying to have a certain number of par-3's and par-5's, or just letting fly?  I didn't take time to do a scorecard of your selections.

I think 18 at Old Mac is the correct pick, though I'd pick 7 at Pacific over 7 at Old Mac any day.

The 6th at Pacific Dunes is one of the best holes at the whole complex, hard to believe that got beaten out by a par-3 course, but I understand wanting to include a hole or two from the Preserve, which is a special place.  [I honestly can't remember what hole is what there, though.]

I would also agree with the 4th at Bandon Trails, which is one of my favorite holes in Bandon.  So much so that I am going to build my own version of it in Florida next year!

Mike,

I picked what I think are the strongest holes in each slot on the card with a view to having a reasonable spread of 3s, 4s, and 5s. I also gave some consideration to variety of length and type of hole as well (shows how good I think OM 3, 18, and PD 17 are given that they are based on templates). Par 5s were a challenge; there are a contingent of strong ones across the property, but they fell up against some of the best holes (BD 3, PD3, BT 3, BT 16, and PD 18). My alternate “routing” would have BT 3, PD6, and Preserve 9.

Have a terrific trip, and I will be alert to see how your views compare to mine.

Tom,

I appreciate your picking BT 4 given the splendor of PD 4. BD 4 and SR 4 are very good too.

As noted, the 6 slot was a really difficult choice. Yes, I wanted to represent Preserve for the reason you state, but also 6 at Preserve is such a cool hole. It is the one below the dune that runs parallel to the beach. We played it into a stiff breeze and watched 3 pretty good players giggle as they tried to figure out how to play it.

I am going to have to disagree about the 7 slot. PD 7 is a great design and BT 7 and BD 7 both are well routed holes with interesting features and elevation changes, but OM 7 is one of my favorite holes anywhere. And it is one that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. Plus the view from the green is as you know spectacular.

The 7th at Pacific Dunes is a favorite.  The tee ball is surprisingly demanding as the bend in the fairway must be negotiated.  The crumpled ground short of the green is nothing less than beautiful,  and challenging if one’s tee shot was lacking.

Most importantly, as I walk down the fairway I am transported to the Heathland. It warms my heart.

#3 pacific is my favorite par 5 in the world.

13 indeed is a fantastic hole. I was playing from the Golds so the tee was near the Ocean. On our first round, our caddie (who was excellent) told me three times that there is more room left than it looks. I of course bailed right. We were paired up with a very good woman player who proceeded to pound it left center and catch the speed slot. She made a very impressive birdie. On our second round, I told the caddie “I know, I know” and still bailed right.

Btw, I am surprised no one has challenged me on BT14 or made what could be strong cases for BD12, 14, 16, and 17. And BT12 is an awfully good long par 3.

This was a lot more fun with a 4th course in the mix! Here's my version. I agree 16 was the toughest so I just gave it to all of them. 3 at Pac is also my favorite par 5 at the resort (and up there for anywhere I've played).

Final count:
BD - 2
PD - 5
BT - 4
OM - 3
SR - 3

Ira,

Played 9 courses and walked 151 holes in 4 days.  I'm still partially decompressing.  :P

I know my opinions surprised me course to course but I'll look forward to going through this mental exercise over the weekend.

It's your list. There's no challenging anyone's list. Folks should simply post their own and go on about their business.

I haven't seen the sheep ranch but I like your list Ira.

Personally I'd sub in #6 at Pac Dunes which is one of my favorites on the entire property, along with #3 at OM and #16 at Bandon.

#7 at OM is such a well-conceived hole...thank you for posting.
