New James Braid book
« on: October 20, 2022, 06:01:42 AM »
I haven't been on the gca site for a good while so I don' t know if there's been a thread about the James Braid book that appeared earlier this year.

Anyway, a review has just been published on the www.top100golfcourses.com website for this mighty tome:

I'd really like to know what work - if any - Braid did at Rosapenna, but I'd rather not take a chance on purchasing the book and then discover there's no mention of Rosapenna at all. It does sound like a really comprehensive set of books.

Good to see you posting. A couple of questions;

- how does Volume 3 compare to the Moreton and Cumming book - Braid and his 400 courses ?

- is the £250 price tag for all 3 volumes together or for each volume ?

Niall,

It says on the YPD page that the £250 covers all three books.

This book blows the other one competely out of the water!

Donal

Rosapenna is listed under a section at the back of VOLUME 3 entitled "COMMENTS ON COURSES WHERE OTHERS HAVE ATTRIBUTED SOME ELEMENT OF DESIGN TO BRAID" where the author states:

"It is said that Vardon and Braid together added length and bunkering to Old Tom's course in 1906, while they were there to play in a match. There does not seem to be any reports of such a match or of Braid ever being at Rosapenna."

Apologies for presumably being the author of reply #6!!!
