OT Do you think booking Donegal next year will be tough?

A friend wants to go up that way next September for his 60th birthday. (What’s the big deal about 60?). 


  I’m wondering about the booking problems caused by Covid spilling over to next year particularly for St.Patrick’s.

I'm pretty sure you will be OK. The ratio of tee times to hotel rooms is such that there should be plenty of availability for play. Booking your accommodation is more likely to be an issue than tee timesI suspect so it's worth getting that sorted sooner rather than later.

Agree with Mike.  I was worried about the trip I made in June as almost every course required advance payment to reserve times.  Portrush didn't have an online option to see the tee sheet either.  I only made one advanced booking for the 36 at Ballyliffin and it wasn't necessary.  I was able to walk up to every course and head straight to the tee by arriving at 8am (seemed to be the time staff arrived).  I generally prefer playing early and it seemed courses didn't start to fill up until after 9am.

Suggest flying a day early to combat possible cancelled flights and iffy golf club baggage issues.

Tee times are only a problem at the famous clubs that restrict the number of visitor tee times.  I've heard that Royal Portrush are cutting theirs back even further.  But St. Patrick's, with no local membership, has no issues with this and you can play as many rounds as you want.     There might be a couple of clubs in Donegal where weekend tee times are limited, but only a couple.

Unless there is another contagion ravaging the place, shouldn't be a problem. Good time of year too. St Patricks, obviously, is the star but the other Rosanna courses are great. Donegal (aka Murvagh) is a bit of a drive down to the south of the county, also takes you towards Rosses Point (aka Co. Sligo). Some of the Donegal courses offer walk-up open competitions for visitors.


Alternatively, head over to Northern Ireland (you will only notice when the road signs switch from km/h to miles per hour, and the golf area with Castlerock, Portstewart and Portrush all very close to one another.
