OT - USGA Junior at Bandon Dunes
« on: July 26, 2022, 10:07:32 PM »
Anybody been following the scores in medal play qualifying? They are playing the Bandon Dunes and Trail courses. The medalist was -9 over 2 rounds.  16 guys were -4 or better. +1 will be in a playoff for matchplay.

Statistics for Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails for stroke play qualifying

https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/championships/2022/u-s--junior-amateur.html#!course-statistics

Bandon Trails played about 1.5 strokes tougher than Bandon Dunes, despite being par 71 vs Bandon Dunes par 72.

#15 was toughest on Trails, #11 on Dunes.    (Oops: had #14 listed in error)

Wow!  Jack Cantlay, younger brother of Patrick, shot a 28 (-8) on day one over his final 9 holes at Bandon (he finished with holes 1-9).

Also surprised at the number of international players, and some unexpected countries.

I know they've used all the courses for the various USGA events that have been held there, but I believe they also used Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails for the US Amateur two years ago?

I was going to say that 11 doesn't seem like it would be playing the toughest relative to par on Dunes, but thinking about it I'm not sure which hole I would expect to be the toughest.

#11 Dunes was the longest par 4 on the course (437) and is played into the prevailing wind. Don't know what winds they had.
The only par 4 over 440 was 11 Trails around 480, but that is downhill and normally downwind.

That sure would have been something, but it was a 14 on #14.  How did you mess up reporting that?   ;D

The geographic range of the boys who made the round of 64 matchplay is remarkable. There are players from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, China, Korea, Thailand, South Africa, Norway, Spain, Germany, Cayman Islands, Paraguay(!), India(!!) and Pakistan(!!!). It is truly a global game.

Well that's a good point, in my two trips to Bandon I've had winter wind both times, 11 was downwind.

They did use them for the Am and also for the 2007 Mid-Am.  I heard from a friend there that the wind was out of the south for a good part of day 2.
