Senior Open at Gleneagles King’s
« on: July 18, 2022, 12:00:33 PM »
Moving swiftly along on the great Scottish golf tournament 2022 season, we have the splendicious King’s Course at Gleneagles hosting the Senior Open. It’s so good having it back in the professional fold, even if it’s only the old codgers! (Yes, it looks like our very own Jeff Warne may have qualified with a -3 at Blairgowrie today).

If you haven’t seen the Course, do try to catch some of the play on TV this week - sub-6000 yards of Braid genius over some of the best inland terrain in Scotland.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the heads up and the link. I hope Jeff Warne does get thru.

I see Jean Van de Velde and Gary Nicklaus played (not well enough) at Ladybank.

A question - is there much of a difference between the 2 courses at Blairgowie?

Been a while, but Rosemount Course was much shorter, and more enjoyable, than the longer and a bit of a slog Landsdowne Course, to me.

We followed both Jean and Gary for a few holes at Ladybank (to be honest, I was hoping for a Golden Bear sighting - sadly, not to be). Conditions were incredible today, but hot, hot, hot! (30 degrees in Fife).

Lansdowne course is narrow and instantly forgettable. Big fan of the Rosemount but it did lose 2 of its holes to the Lansdowne (1 & 18 of the latter which are by far its best holes) which were replaced by two average ones in a field.

I can't tell if Jeff W has qualified, but with play completed for the day his -3 was good enough for 5th place, tied with 4-time PGA Tour winner Carlos Franco, which is just wonderful, top flight golf. A hearty congratulations Jeff -- and if there is more to come, keep the great play going and best of luck!

I know that the R&A site says the King's course will be 5904 yards and par 70, but that is clearly a mistake.  The European Tour web site lists the course at par 70 and 6859 yards for the Senior Open.  That seems more in keeping with the King's course as I recall playing it a few years ago.

Jeff has qualified - there were supposed to be 12 spots at each of the four qualifying sites with around 500 players trying to qualify.

I suspect that Gary See will be Jeff's caddy for the event - he is a pretty good player as well.

Congrats Jeff (not that I know you). A good mate was up at 5am and secured a reserve spot after a 6 person play off at 8pm. Long day, hoping he gets a start.

Great playing Jeff. Good luck!

Great week-still enjoying the event.
fantastic experience with many old and new friends.
Thanks for all the kind words of congratulations and encouragement.
Have had zero down time for last 10 days, between arranging travel, lodging etc, and juggling two other day jobs.
-finally get a break ;) from the golf and looking to enjoy the next two days with my family who have patiently endured the quirks and demands of competitive golf thrust into an adjusted improvised schedule in an extremely challenging travel environment.
Currently staying in Comrie and looking forward to a walk around the golf club(without my clubs!) late night or early morning.
Plenty of things to discuss from an architectural/setup standpoint to keep it on topic once I catch my breath later next week back stateside.

Once again, very well done and I look forward to getting your thoughts in due course. In the meantime, enjoy Comrie, a fine nine holer whether you're playing or not.

Jeff,

Terrific stuff and way to go, you did GCA proud!

Which holes would you say were the biggest surprises from what you see on TV to being there in person

Both have tee shots that either play into a ridge that’s squeezed in with bunkers; or if you’re long enough you fly the ridge, have a wide open fairway and get a huge bounce off of a downslope. One day on 12 guys were hitting hybrids off the tee of a 475 yard hole, then playing a blind second shot from 240 that had to be immediately elevated over the ridge. Similarly on 18, average hitters were using less than driver off the tee of a par 5 while long hitters would carry the ridge and have mid or short irons in from a wide landing area.

Jeff Warne has made some lengthy posts about playing the course on this other Gleneagles thread:

https://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php?topic=71013.0

I don't recall if he specifically discusses holes 12 & 18.

that is also a feature at New South Wales GC on holes #5 and #12 (both par 5's).  The turbo kick also applies to a less severe degree on a number of other holes.  However, the area short of the ridge isn't pinched with hazards each side (#15 is the exception, with the saddle in the ridge pinched tightly).  You may have played there some 20 years ago when you were down under?

Strong reward for being able to carry a ball a particular distance, and a lay-up for those who can't.

Spot on and with the new tees #14 was exactly the same tee shot as 12 and 18.
Other than 3 very similar shots/strategies, I really don't have a problem with the design of each hole-and I kind've thought each of the holes themselves individually as far as design were  cool or at least unusual.

My nit was the narrow/ball eating gunch short layup landing areas, especially when having to factor in huge bounce and roll of rock hard micro-undulations in fairways. To be fair,18 was much wider in the layup area than the other two similar tee shots-but still quite easy to lose a ball -5 yards off the fairway as I did but there was ample room on the hole...
