Anyone think we may see an ace on #18 at TOC this week? :)

There must be a line set on this at the overseas bookies . . . I wonder what the odds are?

Do they ever put the pin in the valley?

No because it wouldn't be on the green and after all it is a 'gathering area'.

However on Sundays they put the pin and flag off to the left of the green so tourists can get a picture of themselves on the 18th green - the one with the R&A clubhouse behind them! And the green is saved wear and tear.

Good to know. I always thought the valley was part of the green, like 17 at Merion.

Second question - how many 2's will be made on #18?

David your third line could be how many will hit Rusacks and go OB trying to go for the green.

A fair few 2’s might be beneficial to the game in the long term.

When I played in the Dunhill 15 years ago, one of the pros in our group [who was well under par for the day] blocked his tee shot into Rusack's, but somehow it came back onto the course.

As we walked off the tee I gave him a wide-eyed look, and he said he had a last-second fear that he would drive it through the green and o.b. because we were very downwind, so he quit on the shot and blocked it right. It's a good bet that someone will do that again this week, though hopefully not someone in contention!

Don't forget, Nicklaus drove a 3-wood thru the 18th green 50 or so years ago.

(Yes, it was downwind and yes, it was with the small ball.)

Luckily for him, it didn't go out of bounds, or he might have clunked himself in the head, instead of almost getting Doug Sanders.

But I doubt his ball was chasing through 18 green with the same momentum some guys could have on their shots today.

With how far the ball goes now, 18 would be a lot more interesting if there wasn't a 'saving' fence behind the green..

P.S.  It looks like the valley of sin is certainly cut to green length for a good portion of it, even if not all of it..

On the Golf Channel broadcast today someone said 6 out of 30 some drives on 18 went OB over the green. Also to expect 6 drivable par 4's and some 400 yard drives because the ground is so firm. :o
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Looking at the telecast tonight it looks tough to tell the difference between where  the fairways end and the greens begin. Is that true in person?

Aren't the fairways brown and running fast while the greens are green and running a bit slower?

In the third round in 1995, John Daly drove it left of the green, it rolled WAY up the slope, but stopped just short of continuing OB.

It rolled back down to the 1st tee, Daly 2 puitted, and we all know what happened Sunday.

I heard on the broadcast that someone hit the flagstick on 18 in a practice round.  Anyone know who?
