You can see that Sanders' nerve had gone by his actions on 17. The numerous twitches and glances down the hole on the tee were bad enough, but on his second shot he took 17 looks at the hole and had the club set behind the ball for 36 seconds! He couldn't start the swing. Hard to watch.

Henry Longhurst is the commentator on the 18th, as I'm sure most all know, but the American voice calling the 17th is none other than Mark McCormack, the agent for Nicklaus at the time. He worked BBC coverage for years while selling the TV rights overseas.

Also didn't realize that Trevino was the 54-hole leader that year and was playing with Sanders.  I guess he learned from his poor round, since he went on to win the next two Opens.

You are right!  I counted 17 looks at the hole before the second shot at 17.

It was almost an aim at it bunker back then it looks like. In 1978 it was considerably deeper when Nakajima had his adventure.  It was also interesting to see how short the nets/fence/wall was on the 17th tee.

I recall that Tony Jacklin was 7 under after the front-9 on day and was still going strong on the back-9 when a huge rain storm washed out play for the rest of the day. Resuming the next day he ended up scoring 67.
As to Jack Nicklaus’ famous tee shot on the 18th in the playoff I believe his opponent Doug Sanders drove the front of the green.
