Real Estate Courses hosting majors
« on: June 05, 2022, 12:03:52 AM »
This week we have MV and Pine Needles on TV. Are the only real estate courses to host majors Pebble Beach, Pine Needles and Oak Tree. All three have a few holes with out of bounds on both sides. And MV had a Ryder Cup. Any more?

Which holes at Pebble Beach have OB "IN PLAY" on both sides of the hole? ???  I have never seen a pro hit the ball OB on any hole but the right side on the back side of Pebble and maybe the left of one or two but I have never seen it.

With the danger of ending up on a list of undesirable guests, haha, I'd offer up Merion as a very, very good "real estate" course that's hosted a few majors. In many cases I'd consider that term pejorative, but it doesn't have to be of course.

#2 has some homes on the left side of the opening holes but i wouldn't call it a real estate course.

...and Pine Needles is no different than #2 in this regard.

I think of 18 , 1 , maybe the old 5 as real estate type holes at Pebble. Doesn’t 17 at Pine Needles have houses on both sides? None of these are overdone real estate courses where the homes basically frame fairways.

I am not sure what real estate courses mean, but I thought it was courses built to sell lots or planning/integrated courses in a neighbourhood. For instance, Yeamans Hall, Barton Hills and Hope Valley have integrated courses as part of the development. Maybe you could say YH is a real estate course because I think you had to own land in the estate to belong to the club. There probably are major venues with a similar structure, at least originally, but I can't think of any.

One of the 9s at Oak Tree National is very much a real estate course. We played it as the front 9 for the Senior Open, but I think it might be the back nine in everyday play.

And Pebble has a boundary down the ocean but they mark it lateral and I guess you could play off a boat if you landed there.

I'm sure there are many other examples in other historical sites, but the US Open was held in 1952 at Northwood Club in Dallas.  (Won by Julius Boros.)  That was back when the USGA gave (sold?) the US Open to a club for promotional purposes, and Northwood was a new residential course that wanted the Open to promote itself.
Northwood is a good course and a very nice family country club, but probably wouldn't be considered for an Open today.

Is a course that now has houses around it, like most of the courses built in the suburbs in the 20’s, a “real estate course?” I interpreted the term to mean a course built as part of a real estate project.

I was thinking more of a course that was part of a real estate project. And the two sided reference is where I really feel it applies. Often a course will have one nine that stays more compact and one that has some double sided house holes. Examples: Oak Tree, Shady Oaks, Muirfield Village, maybe one of the Monterey Peninsula CC courses. There are many examples out there.

Pinehurst traditionally follows the structure where membership requires ownership in the village.

Don't 14 and 15 at Pebble have OB on both sides of the hole?

Excluding rooms in a clubhouse I suppose, is there any major championship host course with more beds in close proximity to the 18th green than The Old Course?

I never have understood the houses detract from the architecture argument. If the architecture is good, it is good. Anybody really distracted by the homes along NB or RD? Is St George’s Hill a lesser course because it is in a “housing development”? Heck, Ballybunion Old has a Cemetery, housing development, and mobile trailer park next to it—who cares? And to Tim’s point, if it is ok for TOC, why isn’t it ok generally?

Did the USGA ever say no real estate course will host US Open? If so, was it related to Palmer’s desire to get the US Open to Bay Hill? I have no confirmation this was ever said. Anybody know?
