Ferndown Golf Club - Colt, Park Jr. or Hilton design?
« on: March 26, 2022, 09:04:46 AM »
Can anyone sort this?

Ferndown GC website states Harold Hilton designed the course and it opened in 1913. A 1921 newspaper article states the Club had a formal opening in 1921.

Thank you to Melvyn Morrow for passing along these two newspaper articles through GCA contributor Mike Cirba. The first article states the course was constructed under the supervision of Harold Hilton.

The papers of 1913 report that the course was to be constructed 'under the supervision of Mr. H. Hilton'. Slightly unusual wording -- 'laid out by' was more normal at the time.

It would not surprise me if someone discovered evidence that Colt or Park routed the course. But nothing of that ilk has been found up to press.

[edited to add] we should note that Ferndown is not included in the 1930 list of Colt & Co projects that the company published by way of a marketing document, and that list includes several that were not 'full-service' jobs.

Adam,

I'm totally with you in your suggestion that either Park or Colt might have routed the course, and in fact it wouldn't surprise me if more than one of them or indeed all of them provided a routing/report and that the club simply went with which one suited them best.
