OT - The Vagaries of Match Play
« on: March 27, 2022, 09:53:03 PM »
It is too bad both the final and consolation matches in the Dell were so flat (boring!) this afternoon. The lead never changed hands in either match. The final match ended on the 15th hole, leaving the NBC broadcast with 25 minutes of air time to fill. Now we know why the TV networks do not want to broadcast more match play tournaments.

It is a shame, as there were a lot of exciting matches earlier in the event.

Since the topic is OT please allow me to add a related OT matter: tobacco and spitting on the golf course.  I cannot stand players like Kisner, Johnson, Koepka, Berger, etc. playing with tobacco bulging from their cheeks and spitting a green/brown slime on the course. Tobacco has been banned by baseball and it should be banned by golf.  We don't see players smoking cigarettes for many reasons including their being athletes, the social stigma, and the simple fact that it is unhealthy but somehow they can use tobacco if it is not smoked.  There are kids out there watching golf and seeing these top players using tobacco and they will follow the example - I have seen juniors at my club doing so.  The PGA Tour should step up and ban the use of all forms of tobacco while at the venue where the tournament is being played.

Tobacco/spitting is no different than music, hats turned around or shirts untucked. Some see white trash; others see country club white privilege.

Personally I'd like to see them play 36 for seeding, and take the top 16, two matches on Saturday and Sunday to settle things.

Have to expect Kisner doing chew to irk his opponent as much as enjoying the nicotine buzz, is that a PGA privilege or southern boy stereotype thing?  They are independent contractors, is there a contract morals clause at play?

At the WCC we are now being told that we can't have our headwater maladjusted and are expected to have tucked in shirts... no ClubCorp privilege there, nothing on chewing but I'd wish they'd say something about cigs and cigar butts.  Most of the music playing guys ask if its ok, I normally tell them I'd rather not hear anything unless its Zappa or Zeppelin, sorry.

I met a guy that got to play AA minor league baseball and when he couldn't deal with the "chew issue" anymore, he moved to using a Tootsie Roll ball in his mouth for the bulge and brown spitting look... after he swallowed it one day, the other guys left him alone.

I think the one thing the match play has proved is, it doesn't really matter where you play it cause par actually is meaningless.

I would think/suspect, that moving this to different old school venues every year would be interesting to fans and players as I can't imagine these guys wouldn't be at least somewhat interested to play venues like CPC, Merion, National Golf Links, etc in a competitive environment. (Much less the $2 mill check to the winner) Hell just seeing how many showed up to Seminole this year instead of the Honda Classic was evidence enough.

Tobacco dipping is no joke and so very addicting. My brother is addicted more than 20 years after he stopped playing minor league/college ball. It is sad really as this is a terrible example for his kids and he has tried to quit numerous times. Health impacts he knows and those that are probable to come. If you can restrict its use publicly like MLB did, I think that is a path welcomed to save many from even starting.

Steve: They are only independent contractors in some areas but there is a code of conduct which they must follow and Rory wanted to make the fines and suspensions public.  I can guarantee you that a guy pulling out an alcoholic beverage during a round would result in a fine and I know that there have been fines for improper language so barring the use of tobacco while playing or practicing could easily be enforced. If I remember correctly Jimenez made a comment regarding his lighting of a cigar after a victory saying in essence they cannot penalize me now.

 8)  Cal, ill-gotten credit or not, it worked... got him thru some major peer pressure...

Jerry, I'm fine with barring chew, nothing but disgusting and unhealthy if you ask me.   Never seen the attraction to cigars either and remember that Jimenez comment, never  knew what it was about, thanks.

Role models indeed... not good karma there
