George F. Clark - Golf Course Constructor
« on: March 30, 2022, 08:18:35 AM »
Below is an article written by George F. Clark in the Canadian Golfer magazine. Mr. Clark states he constructed courses for Willie Park Jr. and Donald Ross. Bret Lawrence posted this article previously on GCA in 2019. I wanted to post the below following images that provide additional information for whom this man was.

Nice work Karl.  It makes me wonder if William D. Clark was related to George.  William D. Clark designed a few courses in Florida that have been mistaken for Donald Ross courses in the past.  Maybe they just shared the same name and occupation, but it would be interesting to find out if there was a closer connection.

Pretty sure he was the pro at the Greenbrier for a short stint.

There were a ton of Clark's in the golf business early on, with John Clark in California joining William (noted above) as being active in the design and construction realm.

Jeff,

The WW1 Draft Registration Card came from the subscription website Ancestry.com. That card proves him to be the correct man by the address match on it to the golf constructor advertisement address.

Brett and Sven,

Below is a link to a preview of a book on Google Books that has a portrait of William D. Clark. The other link below is to a full page of a 1909 Los Angeles Daily Times newspaper that has many images of William D. Clark.

George Frederick Clark was born in 1882 in Redditch, England of English parents. William Davidson Clark was born in 1874 in Edinburgh, Scotland of Scottish parents. I don't believe they are in any way related other than having the same common surname of Clark.

Karl,

Thank you for providing that background information and answering my question on the Clark’s.
