Austin CC (hot take)

Hot take
Austin CC is the best course to watch the PGA Tour pros tackle every year.
Reasons:
Always plays firm and fast
Beautiful scenery
Lots of birdie and bogey holes
Lots of contours in fairways and greens
No rough for wild recovery play
Like most Dye courses you see players have to recover from unusual situations
I would say Austin and Kapalua are the two courses I like watching every year on the Tour. Coincidentally, I think the courses have a lot in common.

It is entertaining to watch, but not reflective of the course in its most usual conditions.  This time of the year it is probably the most difficult in terms of course conditions (dormant bermudas with little leaf resistance, beat down grasses from carts and foot traffic) and typically heavy winds.  My handicap from late December through April is typically 3-4 strokes higher.  I've played ACC a few times and I doubt that I would break 110 playing the ball down by the rules under current conditions.  Too bad that they don't have two days of medal play to reduce the field to the final 16.  Now, that would be a different level of interesting.

The 18th hole ( which is 9 for the tournament ) reminds me a lot of the 17th at Kapalua. As Lou points out, in a month it will be a totally different course as the Bermuda goes crazy in the heat( and when the take the hospitality backstops out).

Love the array of recovery shots presented around greens, and watching the ball spend so much time rolling out.

Every time I see the 11th hole (2nd hole tournament) I always think it is such a wonderfully laid-out hole, however just wish the green accepted a running approach from short right.  However, right where you would need to land it to do that Dye dug out a hole and takes that option away. Definitely makes the hole more difficult, but I feel like if the green allowed for that approach it would make it a really great hole.

Agree its fun to watch, but wonder if the play would be anywhere near as interesting if it was stroke play...

A lot of what adds to the excitement is the near non-stop aggressive risk-tasking instead of the bogey-avoidance the other 51 weeks of the year

Pete Dye certainly requires the expertise of a lob wedge and a pair of good hands. Fun for those of those who have those
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I also really enjoying watching how the course performs during this week every year. It is a very tough routing and piece of land, but kudos for Pete Dye doing as good as could be expected I think. Nice mix of yardages for approaches and just the right amount of hazards, which are quite a bit. This event will only get bigger as Austin grows as well.
