Water in Different Forms

We like it when it’s flanking and salt based. Not so
much when it’s a man made lake/pond that requires a forced carry. Does Bay Hill have too much water for anyone but the the long hitting low digit player? There is a certain point that it can cease to be fun for a good segment of amateur players even from the right tees. I’m not saying you won’t get to the house but you may take the ball out of the hole on 18 on one knee. As a contrast everyone is enamored with a hole flanked by sea/sound/ocean. We are way more apt to accept the forced carry if there is salt water on the perimeter. Is this where the hand of nature wins out?

Yes I think most of us do. I can think of a handful of holes right in my back yard that the average player (or worse ) has an awful time playing. The place where I grew up caddying (Woodcrest Flynn 1929) flipped their nines a while back creating a tough par 5 with a carry over a lake. If we were betting my guess is that 50% of the players don't finish or make a big number on the hole.


So most of us don't want too many forced carries , particularly those who can't hit it up in the air. As to today thought that Arnold would have loved the way his superintendent had the "maintenance meld".  Made them play strategic golf and really exposed some short games that weren't up to snuff.....

When water features/hazards whether streams, ponds, beach’s etc etc are involved so is maintenance. And maintenance costs money and adds to costs and fees and subs. And then there’s the drainage and irrigation aspects.

The irrigation aspect has become more important in recent years as in many areas golf courses are much more restricted in sourcing their water and need ponds.  Over the last 20 years many of the clubs here in the Toronto area have had to put in irrigation ponds.  In some instances they are in play, but at other like Toronto GC, Hamilotn G&CC and Scarboro they are not in play at all.
