Bang for Your Buck Renovations
« on: February 12, 2022, 03:35:49 PM »
Golf Digest has a pithy piece about the great disparity in the cost of renovating/restoring golf courses. As a “homer” I’ll note that the article highlighted the great (and not that pricey) work done by Tyler Rae at Beverly CC in Chicago.

The work that Bruce Hepner did bringing back the 1916 Wille Park Jr gem for Woodway (the course pictured in the article) is truly transformational.

Here is a photo from 2006 of the same hole (13).

Trying to figure out how to get an image posted to show just how transformational, but so far unsuccessful.

You have to post through a third party host like Photobucket or Shutterfly.

I have talked with many architects recently re reconstruction costs.  And, while prices have shot up due to supply chain issues and so forth, and the $25 Mil Gil Hanse renovations/restorations get all the press, I believe most renovation projects are closer to those in the article (or less) than the high cost ones presented in the press.

After all, despite post covid play increases, for most courses, golf is a tough biz, and all things considered, spending less beats spending more.  Or, more appropriately, fix what is broken, and leave the rest seems to be the order of the day for most courses.

We have two threads running that appear to be asking the same question???

Maybe we can consolidate

Yeah 25 million renovation and say they have 500 members.  That's a $40k assessment per member.   :o

I don't think Baltusrol assessed the members for the recent renovation.

If that is the case then whoever has been managing their capital budgeting is a star.  Good on them.

The best renovation I have seen in a LONG time is the work done by Troy Miller at Charleston Muni. It is outstanding and elevated a good municipal course into a fabulous "must play" in the Charleston area. Not sure what it cost, but it had to be reasonable considering the client.

EDIT:  According to Golf Course Architecture magazine, the budget was around $3M... with a great deal of the funding coming from public donations.
