18 par-3’s, par-4’s and par-5’s often played between two lines of tall trees. Boring?

Thought number one: you are seriously stereotyping parkland golf.

My impression of Saunton East was that if I missed left or right, I lost the ball. It felt just like playing some parkland courses where if I missed left or right in the trees, I lost the ball.

Golf is always fun. Frustration from losing golf balls diminishes the fun, and takes more time.

It's not as much fun as links golf, in my opinion, but that doesn't make it boring. Just different.

 8)  When one grows up on a parkland style course, you learn how to hit it straight... especially in the fall when the trees are losing their leaves.  GO errant and you just hope you find something better than what you lost... run out of balls, and you walk home... great incentive.

One might as well say that links golf with its randomness and uncertainty is ok, but it's just a built in excuse for bad luck..

This is a pretty disingenuous way to look at parkland golf, I'd think. There is of course a lot of bleh parkland golf, but a lot of good I've seen also.

In many cases the golf would be more original and interesting if the course was laid out after and within the park, and adapted to that, rather than the other way around, with certain rules and accepted conventions on creating hole length, shaping, par, hazards, fairness, strategy, conditioning that many have the money and desire to satisfy.

But that's probably true of any genre of course.

Jeff,

When Cobb's Creek was designed, the original architects (i.e. Wilson, Crump, Smith, et.al.) had to do exactly that as they were prohibited by the Philadelphia Fairmount Park Commission from removing any trees.

Accounts a few years after mentioned this restriction only having one negative impact and that was on the closing hole they intended to be their Magnum Opus.  They didn't know it at the time but with a little time and luck it still will be, 108 years later.

I remember playing Downsfield in Scotland (inland) after playing 25 rounds of links golf and I went... this is easy...

Links golf is often a brain surgery where you have to think each shot... thinking about the flag location on a 430 yard hole...

Then you go inland and go, ok 150 to the hole, 8 iron...  done for the thinking
