Aerial of the Day #439 (and #440) - 21 Nov 2003
« on: November 21, 2003, 09:48:29 AM »
I swear this is not a repeat.  It hasn't been shown two times now.

For the stumper, I violated one of my 'rules' of AOTD that I've
mostly kept to:  repeating an architect in the same week.

Do I see a hole with two greens?

#1's pic was taken less than a year before the statue by the
18th green was put there.  A statue we all wish didn't have a
need to be there.

Tinker CC?

Many on this site have played this course - and for good reason.

Notice a good amount of greenside bunkers actually 10-20
yards from the putting surface.  Unusual.

#2:

Protection GC?

Architect likes holes with drawn drives and faded approaches or vice versa.

In hometown area of architect.

I'm shocked that this course has not been shown two times
before.

I'm trying to remember, which member of the "Friends" cast
 was the archie on #1?
"... and I liked the guy ..."

Whoa... I've never seen an aerial of
#1, likely one of the handful of most
famous courses in the country...

And I must say it doesn't look like
all that big of a deal from the air!

But an aerial doesn't allow one to
see contour, does it?   ;D

Is #2 #1 or is #1 #2?

For #1, host to a recent U.S. Open and received it's next
U.S. Open date in the fastest turnaround in modern times.

No truly outstanding holes, but no weak ones, either.  Not
many great courses can say that.

Bring your 'A' short game.

For #2:

Sumter Dix Bragg GC?

Brickyard West?

Liddy on site again with Dye name.

#1/#2 was the site of my worst caddie experience ever ...
it was a payne-ful experience that I cleansed from my
system by not taking my caddies read on my lengthy par
putt on the 18 hole, and I made it ...   ;D

#1 had sand greens for many years in the early part of the century.

Architect, AOTD's fave, lived at and changed the course
continually for many years.  Considered his masterpiece.  At
today's modern green speeds, doesn't play as it should.

Top 10 in the country in just about every poll.

Surprisingly little talk today about such a bigtime course.  One
of those 'special ones' saved for near the end.

#2:

New Daddy Letterman hails from here.

I guess the 'female' version of this course essentially means
the same thing.  It just acts like one without actually being one?   :P

I think this made top 10 Best New in GD for 1997.

#1 is site of my only hole in one, on the 17th (big clue there but if you don't have it by now...)  The thing that shocks me is that the course looks so tight from the air, but obviously doesn't play that way at all.  I shouldn't say tight I guess, but it doesn't look like it would be that hard to find some tree trouble.  However even a wild hitter like me doesn't find the woods too often there.  The trees sure look denser from the air than they actually are.  Maybe it's just because of the lack of undergrowth.

Scott, regarding #2 is that Dave's hometown or just his home state?

John,

Dave's hometown.

The tree shadowing makes #1 look narrower.  I was pretty
wild my one time here and I found the trees on several holes.  :-[

This is Pinehurst #2, in Pinehurst, NC, designed (and
massaged ad nauseum) by Donald Ross.  Host of 1999 U.S.
Open and future host of 2005 U.S. Open.  Annual host of
North & South Amateur.  Hosted 1994 U.S. Senior Open, a
couple of Tour Championships just before then, and a PGA
event in the early 70's at least.

web site (w/virtual tour):

http://www.pinehurst.com/golf/courses2.asp

and GCA course profile:

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/pinehurst1.html

other clues include:

It hasn't been shown "two" times now

"1's pic was taken less than a year before the statue by the
18th green was put there.  A statue we all wish didn't have a
need to be there." = this pic was taken in Feb '99, 4 months
before the U.S. Open, with Payne Stewart's memorble win and
fist pump upon sinking the winning putt.  There is now a
statue commemorating Stewart's life, putt, and victory left of
the 18th green.

Tinker CC? = refers to Ross' continual tinkering of the course.

"I'm trying to remember, which member of the "Friends" cast
was the archie on #1?" = "Ross"

"Is #2 #1 or is #1 #2?"

For #1, host to a recent U.S. Open and received it's next
U.S. Open date in the fastest turnaround in modern times. =
1999 and modern record 6-year wait to next, 2005.

No truly outstanding holes, but no weak ones, either.  Not
many great courses can say that.

"Bring your 'A' short game" = best approach-thru-green course in America?

"#1 had sand greens for many years in the early part of the
century." = until 1935.

Architect, AOTD's fave, lived at and changed the course
continually for many years.  Considered his masterpiece.  At
today's modern green speeds, doesn't play as it should. = Ross

Top 10 in the country in just about every poll.

#2 is The Fort, in Indianapolis, IN, designed by Pete Dye and
Tim Liddy.  Achieved #3 Best New Affordable in GD in 1998
and has been in GD's Top 10 Best in State for the past 3 ranking periods.

web site:

http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/inns/ftharrison/golf.html

other clues include:

"I violated one of my 'rules' of AOTD that I've mostly kept to:
repeating an architect in the same week." = two Dye's, Lost
Canyons and this.

"Protection GC?" = "fort"

Architect likes holes with drawn drives and faded approaches
or vice versa. = Dye

In hometown area of architect. = Indianapolis/ Indiana

"Sumter Dix Bragg GC?"  = 3 famous Forts

Brickyard West? = another Dye public/resort course in
Indianapolis (located west of Brickyard Crossing).

Liddy on site again with Dye name

"New Daddy Letterman hails from here." = Dve Letterman hails from Indianapolis

I guess the 'female' version of this course essentially means
the same thing.  It just acts like one without actually being one?  = "fortress"

I think this made top 10 Best New in GD for 1997

What is up with the cart paths crossing the fairway SIX times at The Fort?  And I don't mean just in front of tees, they look like they cross right in the middle of play.
