Lonsdale Links

I've tried searching for posts on the newly opened Lonsdale Links and haven't found anything, so I thought it could be an interesting first post.

I recently made the trip down to the Bellarine Peninsula for a weekend away with the family and snuck in rounds at Barwon Heads and Lonsdale Links. Barwon Heads was as fun as always, but I was really excited for the Sunday round at Lonsdale.

For those that don't know, Lonsdale Links (formally the Lonsdale Golf Club) is the recently completed project by Ogilvy Cocking Mead. The first 9 holes opened in late 2019 to positive reviews, and the second 9 holes and clubhouse opened in December 2020.

OCM used the work of Charles Blair Macdonald, Seth Raynor and Charles Banks as inspiration featuring a number of template holes for a unique look for an Australian course. Elements of these templates at Lonsdale include the Alps, Biarritz, Plateau, Eden, Leven, Punchbowl, Thumbprint, Redan and a version of the Road that played as a 235m Par 3 for us.

The course also features frequent straight lines and square-edged greens - features that I believe are rare in Australia.

The club's new website that has a fantastic looking video is available below.

All in all, it was an absolute blast to play. There are a number of drivable par 4's, the second shot into the reachable par 5 Punchbowl was thrilling, but the par 3 Thumbprint was the highlight for me.

As someone who hasn't had the privilege of playing NGLA, Fishers Island, Sleepy Hollow or any other Raynor, Macdonald or Tillinghast course, and likely won't get to for a while, Lonsdale Links felt like a little taste of the courses that are out of reach for most Australian golfers.

I would love to hear from people with more than my (admittedly very limited) knowledge of the project and why we don't have more (any?) courses like this in Australia.

Can only reiterate with what Nick said. I played it over Christmas break and thought it was an absolute delight to play.

Really hope this course serves as an impetus to other potential Aussie courses contemplating an 'upgrade'.

Pics on Instagram look amazing. Rates listed on the website are pretty dreamy too.

Played here on Monday. This course is a lot of fun and seems to have flown under the radar a little bit considering the proximity to 13th Beach and Barwon Heads.

Full of short, quirky, template-inspired holes and has a cool old-school aesthetic with green collars running into tees and square corners on many putting surfaces.

Only two sets of tees; the longest were only about 5800 yards at a par of 70 (which I'm told sometimes varies) but there was still plenty of places to hit driver.

Got a very reasonable twilight rate and there might have been less than 20 people on the entire course - played in three hours.

Favourite holes:

#2 - the Biarritz. Sadly the pin was in front and I left my approach about 20 feet short, so I didn't really get a chance to play it "properly". I dropped a ball on the back and made a couple of putts through the dip.

#4 - A really short par four with a small, narrow squarish green sitting hard on a lake.

#6 - An Eden with the Strath more right than fronting with the green making a little "C" around it.

#11 - Short par-five with a blind punchbowl green.

#12 - Short par-three with a thumbprint. The hole location was right in the middle of it; I missed just right and had a fun bump and run over the hump which ran out a few feet too far. Missed and walked off with a four.

#14 - Designed as a reverse redan but it was really short (125-ish metres) and the pin was again on the very front, so I didn't really get to play it like one.

#16 - A driveable version of the Road hole. I hit my drive in road bunker and got up and down for my only birdie of the afternoon here.

From Geelong it's about 25 minutes drive. Highly recommend.

Seems like an awful lot of good golf related stuff arising in Aussie the last few years.
Shame it's so far away and damn covid is involved a well.
