End of February Get Away
« on: January 14, 2022, 06:15:57 PM »
So being trapped in the northeast, golf is limited during this season. I was thinking about getting away in the US for a 3 day weekend for a relaxing and a round or two  at the end of February . Anyone have any suggestions ?

I would try for Streamsong.  3 great golf courses by well respected GCA's.

Since it's only three days, you'll want a destination with a short travel time.

Streamsong, as mentioned above is the first place that comes to mind. Not sure if you can get decent (or any) tee times/lodging  for February at this late date. I'd call them ASAP if that's where you want to go.

Other suggestions are:

Punta Cana, where there are plenty of lodging options. Punta Espada and Corales are the two courses I'd play with LaCana third.

Orlando has a number of good options.
  • Mission Inn has two courses, with El Campeon being the better of the two.
  • Grand Cypress has the Nicklaus links course (f/k/a the New Course).
  • Deltona and Victoria Hills make a good 36 hole day north of Orlando for less than $100. They are both good golf albeit a bit rough around the edges conditioning-wise.
  • Orange County National has two decent courses.
  • Winter Park 9 is quite good.
  • My favorite is Southern Dunes. You could play there for three days and be happy.

Rick - Yes, fly into Tampa.
If the Streamsong Hotel is full, you could stay in Lakeland and drive about 40 minutes to the resort for the golf.  We did that and met a number of others in the hotel who were doing the same thing.

That's what I do. Lakeland is a cool little town too, IMO.

When there is snow everywhere else up to Philly and even near Atlantic City then yes.
AKA Mayday

Rick -

Why not check out Pinehurst/Southern Pines. "Winter" is a great time to get down there.

When I was your age we loaded up a couple of avalanches with 8 guys and hit Myrtle Beach. Total trip for about $350 a man.

Was just looking at the forecast in Bandon.

Next 10 days show: no rain, highs in the mid-to-high 50s, and most days wind won't get over 5 MPH, (and not over 10 on the others).  For winter rates, and those conditions, seems like it would be a helluva value.

Mike when I played Galloway National the member told me they have a very unique micro climate.  Apparently it rarely snows there and when the rest of the Northeast is getting bad weather they are relatively in good shape. Never would have guessed that.

Some nice examples of the ‘other’ architecture there. Frank Lloyd Wright did a few buildings for Florida Southern College. I dragged Nancy there for a ‘study tour’ on our first visit to WDW.

Little?! We are bigger than Green Bay, Wisconsin, sir.

The Pinehurst suggestion is a good one for end of February. All along 95 south of Pinehurst are good options: Charleston, Hilton Head, St Simons/Sea Island/Jekyll Island, and Jacksonville. Plenty of private or public options. Pinehurst will be dormant Bermuda and further south should be fully green at that time of year.

They also have a tsunami advisory this morning.

Did you see the expected size of the wave surges? 1-3 feet... You wouldn't even notice it.   ;D

Much less from the cliffs of Bandon Dunes or Pac Dunes where you're about 100 feet above the beach...

Non-stop flights to the Dominican Republic are so easy.
Then 35 minute cab and youre at Casa de Campo.

Can stay at hotel or rent a condo/AirBnB on one of the courses.
They all come with golf carts.

Fantastic golf , better food, cheaper caddies, lower green fees, better weather in February.
Just an option.

By the time you land in Tampa, rent a car, go to Lakeland, you would be in the DR.

Just an alternative to Streamsong where you can leave with a gigantic hole in your wallet in prime season.

Aren’t you taking a weather chance late Feb in Pinehurst? I know it is not as strange as Texas, but late front is possible I think.

I went to Pinehurst mid Febraury and our round at No. 4 was 37 degrees with an hour and a half frost delay, so yeah, it can be cold. The guys at Mid Pines shop a couple weeks ago said Feb is their coldest month of the year. We had nice days the other rounds, so I think you're rolling the dice a little!

I have a dog in the hunt, but I believe Casa de Campo is the best winter golf in the world - best combination of golf, weather and people. Easy to get to.
