Who would you pay $1000 to golf with?
« on: January 13, 2022, 07:29:47 PM »

  Including dead guys.

And what would you want to talk about IN TERMS OF GCA.

I already spent 5K for Goodale, Sir Bob, McBride and Tiger B., but really 100K is the number - just passing the plate in the Treehouse.

Okay, my Dad . . . . . figure another 100K - 1K per question, after that, he'd tell me to turn on the football game.

Charles Blair Macdonald . . . . . but I get a time machine to play NGLA with him - just before the 1922 Walker Cup.

Actually, I want to caddy for Bernard Darwin.

One last round with Uncle George Bahto - a return to Fishers Island, with Charlie Ferguson.

Add them all up, $1,000,000 is getting off cheap, swear to God.

Anthony Gray, that was pithy enough that I would have thought Barny had written it.

1. William Flynn.  Ask about how his turfgrass management experience may have shaped his designs and how that led to the start of the USGA greens section

2. Tiger Woods…it’s Tiger freakin woods

I tried using acronyms for all. There are others as I have a lot to learn and you only tend to get smarter listening not talking.

I'd want to play with Ben Hogan at either NGLA or Shinnecock, using 1950s equipment. I'd ask him his thinking on every shot, as he picked angles and clubs and trajectories. He probably wouldn't say all that much -- but he'd be such a great ball striker that I could always tell what he was thinking by the results.

I paid more, to a great charity at Shoreacres in a Pro-Am back in the early 90”s. The first nine was with Tom Purtzer and the second was with Fred Couples. I played with a friend who had terminal cancer. He died two days later. Despite his terminal illness, he shot 76.  A very memorable day.

I also played in the Western Open pro-am a few times, an event benefiting the Evans Scholars Foundation.

I have paid nearly this to golf with Jim Thornton. I would recommend this experience for everyone except the person that accidentally but a sesame seed bun on his Big Mac.

Besides one more round with my Dad at a course of his choosing...

1k per man to play in a foursome with Hugh Wilson, George Crump, and Ab Smith at Cobb's Creek prior to the 1928 US Publinks.   Wilson and Crump would have both been dead by then but they'd have the knowledge of how their other creations turned out at that point.   Another grand each to have Tom Paul and A.W. Tillinghast walking along with the group.

Joe Bausch, Geoff Walsh, and Matt Frey would need to be there to caddy for the ghosts and I'd want John Burnes on my bag as John has never seen a shot he doesn't think I can hit.

Playing golf with the dead is a dangerous proposition. For only $1,000 you are most likely going to meet them on their side.

John,

Through circumstance I have played with most of the living architects mentioned.
Highly recommend all of them as great company and amazing conversations.

I would say if you're going architects, Mike Clayton should be included.

Ben Crenshaw
He's someone I have never met.

It was more than this to play in a Pro-Am charity event @ Somerset Hills.  I had the pleasure of being partnered with Woody Austin on the front & Jim Dent on the back.

This event allowed the public to come and watch - like a real gallery - so the Mrs  & our daughter had the opportunity to watch us play.

Quite the day and very enjoyable.

I once more or less did this to play with Phil and Rickie Fowler. Had to gamble it up with them for significant stakes back at the old club. By the time the first ball was in the air, I had at least that in total exposure.

Playing with Mickelson (he was 19th in the world at the time) and Rickie (he was 5th in the world at the time) on a super difficult course with rock-hard greens running 14 playing and off of bare fairway lies was ... an absolute blast. Phil was such a good dude the entire time. Treated us to lunch and stories after. I'll never forget that day.

If anyone's interested, long thread here: https://forums.golfwrx.com/topic/1240914-a-scratch-player-against-phil-mickelson-with-a-700-yard-advantage/

On the day, I think I lost $800. It was worth every penny.
