What courses would you pay $1000 to play?
« on: January 10, 2022, 09:27:25 PM »

 Green fees.

Golf trips have many expenses. Travel and accommodations. Which can be costly. So getting to some of the top courses require a great expense.

But how many courses would you pay $1000 to golf?

Bit of a loaded question.

On the public side?  Can't think of one.  On the private side however....

Show me someone who says he wouldn't pay $1000 to play ANGC... and I'll show you a liar!  ;D   (With a few notable exceptions of those who have access otherwise)

Seems like a silly question. Travel and accommodations are part of appreciating golf architecture. Can’t separate these expenses from green fees.

Be an interesting exercise to backdate timings, your salary, cost of living, greenfees etc 20-30-40 yrs. Might find you've already paid the equivalent in 'old money'???
There's also the "no point in being the wealthiest person in the graveyard" position to consider.

Previously - I would have said none.

But - given now it's pretty much now the only major Mackenzie course I haven't seen - I would pay that that to see Augusta National.

I have been fortunate to play some of the "Big Ones" with the obvious exception of Augusta National Golf Club. However, I would only pay the $1000 to play the original course of Jones and Roberts. It's currently something like 10 degrees outside, so I get to dream:

Others:

  • Timber Point - Sure I would pre-pay $1000, to buy into a real restoration and have some sort of re-opening week event. I know it will not happen, but see 10 degrees out above!!
  • East Potomac - As a Muni Golfer, I like what they are doing down there. Not sure of my actually $$ at this point, but I hope to get there for a re-opening, and see the other in National Links Trust courses.
  • Walnut Lane without Carts - My Home Course and First Course Played. I would pay $1000 to rip out the cart paths and make John Kavanaugh watch the removal of asphalt:

You cannot put a price on life-changing memories.

Maybe my perspective is slightly different because, as an Aussie, i live so far away from 3/4 of the worlds greatest courses (so the green fee becomes a lessor factor)? Also, I am far from a rich man, but I can think of many, many courses i would pay $1000++++ to play (or replay)*,

and.....

I will ask pretty much the same question a different way in a separate post to follow, but....

*starting with , but not exclusively,

ANGC (not played so an obvious choice), TOC, PV, CP, NGLA, Oakmont (& I could go on)

Furthermore, Cruden Bay & North Berwick (not included above because , even though it'd be worth it, they would not charge that much).

Bottom line is that i love & have loved  the chance to play these wonderful courses & an arbitrary figure like A$1000 could not buy back those memories.

Bottom line #2 is that i know on my death bed i will NOT NOT NOT say...."I am glad i saved that $1000 & skipped TOC, PV, CP, NGLA, Oakmont"

You can't take it with you, so most of us use our discretionary income for a splurge here and there. I'd pay 1k for probably 15-20 courses which are difficult to access. Most of which people can imagine I'm sure.

I’m betting if you said to most serious fans of golf that Augusta National has a tee time this week and it’s 1000 bucks and you never played it , we would break into and piggy bank or savings to book it !

Absolutely none. Sorry! To this day I have never gone over £150 or c$200 for a day's golf and that remains my upper limit.

Amen to that!!

I'm of the thinking that in the end, your regrets (if any) are hopefully aligned with the things you did not do. So with that in mind I'm signing up for whatever we can afford.

On a corollary to this, I hope this COVID stuff dies down because I NEED to get to New Zealand!

Absolutely meant as a compliment--ACO is in my top 5 movies and Gib is in my top 5 posters (usually :) ).

Mike Sweeney,

Having just played Langston recently to complete my DC Links Trust Trifecta of East Potomac, Rock Creek, and now Langston, I believe it would be worth your while to play all three pre-restoration/renovation, to give you a good point of reference.   I would also join you for a mid-winter asphalt-removing mission over at Walnut Lane where Joe and I just played with Wayno a few weeks back.   I suspect the limited clubhouse staff over this winter wouldn't object too much.

If they were more geographically accessible, I'd probably pay $1000 to play Royal Melbourne or Tara Iti.

I'd do the same for some courses in the us if they were more accessible in general.

😎😎

I have always said that I would jump on plane and cross the ocean to spend a few days ANGC. However, that sort of pull is not nearly as strong as 10 years ago. I will let you know when an ANGC invite comes along.

This is a strange dichotomy.  In theory, it's the $1000 that is the only thing stopping you from playing either.

Assuming playing for the first time:

The Old Course (played twice)
Augusta National Golf Club
National Golf Links of America (played once)
Pebble Beach Golf Links (played once)
Sand Hills (played thrice)
Merion

Yeah, that'll do it.

Which is why we don’t learn a damn thing from these money questions. Would you pay $100,000 to be a member of ANGC for the last year of your life? Eat me. The penultimate year. No doubt.

Tom,

Not sure I follow what you're asking.

Shadow Creek is the only "public" course I know that's $1000+, and at that rate it would be an easy no for me.  So the question is basically mute for any other publics because they can already be had for less.

On the private side thou, there are a handful of courses I would consider at that amount, including the aforementioned ANGC.

P.S.  But its certainly a case by case basis on the price point. I would probably pay rack rate for Pebble at ~$500, but Torrey Pines even at $200 would be a no.
