The origins of the buried elepant
« on: January 07, 2022, 10:18:58 AM »

 When did this start?

What early courses had them?

What architect uses it the most often?

Would you like to see more?

I’m thinking number 2 at TOC may qualify.

There are contours like that on nearly every piece of links ground.  It just took someone to decide that the contour should be inside the green, instead of at the edges or back in the fairway.

I do not recall whether those contours in the 2nd green at The Old Course were part of the green before it became a double green.  If they were, it was certainly the first instance.  If not, there might have been something at Prestwick or elsewhere in Scotland that qualified as a buried elephant, first.

As Tom says plus in the era when courses were natural lie of the land type and ‘green’ mowing was conducted by the nibbling of sheep or a man with a scythe the speed a ball/feathery/guttie/etc would roll across a slope also governed how humps, ‘buried elephants’ even, could be utilised.

(Early?) Nicklaus loved to use them. There were several at my old home course, Bear Creek in Murrieta, CA. Not his finest work, but some ... ahem ... interesting greens ....

Although not on the green per se, the large hump fronting the 4th green at TOC is what sprung to my mind when I read the question.

Pine Valley once had one on its 18th green.  Been trying to post a picture, but can't figure out how to

One of my favorites is the 8th at Hidden Creek (Coore & Crenshaw).  The par four plays 329 from the tips (under 300 from the middle tees) and features not only a buried elephant on the green but a center line bunker a little over 200 yards from the tee box.

It's one of my favorite holes on the golf course, since the center line bunker requires a decision to be made on the tee shot, and the buried elephant provides real penalty if a precise approach is not executed.  Some may find it quirky, but I love it.
