carpe diem

 8) ;D :'(

Got a nice note from Wayne Morrison today and good news is that Tom Paul is alive and well. Used to talk to him quite regularly but respect his privacy these days. Hope to see his name come up on my phone soon.

Tough week , joined the Shore Club a few months ago , returning after having been a member there from 1990-2001 and really having some great fun. Met a few old friends again and made some new ones, all because of this game we so enjoy!

Two of them died in the last 48 hours, one to a heart attack and the other from a crippling stroke..... so sad they were so much fun and both particularly enjoyed twisting your shorts when you played like a pig. I would give a couple years back to have them twist me just once more.

So, let's try to appreciate life just a little more every day , for it surely is fleeting!

Arch:

At the moment I’m housebound on COVID protocols *  in a snowstorm, but I do look forward to following your advice once I’m cleared to travel again.

I did manage to squeeze in two events with 60 friends in November and December, which was good for the soul, if not for my golfing ego 😉

* We were exposed at the gym.  No sign of illness two days in.

Very sorry for these losses Archie. Devastating.

I turn 50 in May and am reminded every day of the sanctity of life. Tuesday morning, I found out a former teaching colleague lost his 22-yr.-old son whom I never had the pleasure to teach, but knew through our mutual love of music - I am a self-taught musician and he was basically a professional cellist. Lovely young man who is now gone far too soon. Stay safe.

Best

Beautiful Archie. And thanks for sharing. Tom Paul was very kind to me and supportive when I first joined GCA and faced trolling. He would message me “keep your pecker up”. Sad for me his wisdom and experience is not here now. Please tell him I appreciate him. I was younger then but old enough to know to listen to everything he had to offer.

This is in our minds, but when we say it or type it then it becomes real. Good reminder Archie.

A work colleague was talking about his grandmother in Texas who was ill from covid and hoping she would be OK around a morning coffee/tea break. 2 other colleagues were there, one an Indian, the other was from Sudan (passport), but is ethnic Ethiopian and most of his family is in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
Indian gentlemen - He said in a roundabout way, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. However, the worst is more than he ever imagined as he lost both his mom, dad, last living grandparent, brother & sister in-law along w/ 2 of their 5 kids, within a month of each other due to covid. They had to cremate the bodies on the street and he couldn't go back due to travel restrictions. I was stunned and saddened for him as I don't even want to imagine, just give my sympathy.

Sudanese friend - Most are in Ethiopia and he can't get consistent communication with them as the government pulled the plug on internet/phone etc. to the entire region for most of the last year plus. I knew he lost relatives, but no idea the extent. He has lost 8 of his 9 brothers/sisters, 14 of his 20 nieces/nephews since the pandemic started, unfortunately not from the pandemic. They were not in any army, but were killed. He didn't go into the details, but if you know what has been happening there it is horrific.

RIP to all and keeps my concerns in perspective.

Even as a 75 year old retired Lutheran Pastor, I still do funerals. I have had too many of friends that have died in the past year. It was a privilege to preside at them but it hard to do them. I appreciate every day I can ski or run or play golf.

TE Paul had his share of extreme grenade tosses around here, but he's has always been incredibly kind to me - and he freely shared his encyclopedic knowledge on all things Flynn.

I walked NGLA with him at the Nat. Singles and he was nice enough to walk PV with me - even being on the DL with some kind of injury.

Maybe you can help encourage him to climb back up the ladder, his voice (like so many others who were silenced) is sorely missed.

Personally, I've had a miserable last few years, but the worst part has been losing great men, amongst others, like Sir Bob and Brains Goodale.

No secret that my hero Pat Mucci just suffered a heartbreaking family loss . . . . . I cannot do it justice, except to quote him in his trademark green:

"Nobody ever said on their deathbed, I wish I had spent more time at the office and less playing golf"

"Life not a dress rehearsal."

"So stop thinking like a moron!"

I miss when Tom would call me at the USGA to talk about the influence of the Rules on architecture and vice versa.  They were always enjoyable chats.
