 What holes have that tree?


 Isn’t “that tree” a wonderful tool for architects?


 I wish every course had “that one tree”.


 What holes have the aiming tree?


 What holes have that tree to avoid?

18 at Ballyhack has a great tree that is well placed to block any tee ball right of center.  With the ball above your feet a cut around the tree is tricky.

Wish I could post a picture. Worst use of a tree I have ever seen is the 4th hole Innisbrook Island.

17 at Augusta springs to mind. Of the less well known options, the 6th hole at Effingham has a tree that can really skewer you if you hit a long tee shot.

Blackwolf Run River 13. You have to hit a long draw around it, but that requires putting your shot over the creek. One of most difficult Par 3s I have played.


CPC 17. I guess it is technically more than one tree.

Yes, this tree is in the middle of the fairway about 50 yards off the tee on a mid-length par four at Wedgewood GC near Allentown, PA.

It can ruin your day.

The course I played as a child, Yule Golf Course in Alexandria, had a large tree on the left at the turn of the dogleg on the 8th hole.  If you cut your shot off that tree it would find the perfect spot to pitch into the green that tilted toward you.  If you aimed toward the middle of the fairway, your tee shot would run too far to the right and you were in the rough.  If you went left of the tree you were in the rough and the green ran away from you.  The only other option was to hit a big draw, which wasn't my shot shape. It was a shortish par four and perhaps my favorite hole on the course.  At some point when I was in college the tree fell (wind or lightning) and made the hole much less enjoyable.  I guess that is the problem if you build a hole around a tree.

As seemingly out of place as the tree in the center is the pine to its left adds to the claustrophobic vision of the hole.

My recollection is that Tom Doak once posted that he concluded that after the owner having LA Purisma built for himself, and talking to architects about doing it, he concluded he could do it himself.

We all know 17 at Sawgrass. Hunter Ranch has an island green made from trees. How is this possible you ask. Elevated tee, and short, dry climate trees that allow you to see most of the green.

It used to get a lot of curiosity on this site. I posted a thread just showing "trees in the way" there. Didn't post a full tour even though I had the pictures as I didn't think the course warranted it.

Very little mention of the course here after that.

I assume you mean Chambers Bay 2 hours north. It may have a single lone fir, but it is not in play.

Perhaps you mean SLO Country Club where your feedback to the architect was you concerns about a tree blocking the tee shot on one of the holes.

I thought of these two, but decided not to mention.

I always enjoyed the 12th hole at Stanfurd, where I think our John Kirk had a family connection.  Large oaks in the LZ made the drive a bit more interesting.


In San Francisco, the par 3 13th at Presidio has or had a large tree directly in front of the tee.  I just looked on Google satellite and didn't see the tree, so maybe it was removed?  I always thought it was funny and fun to have a tree like that in the way of the green.

Kevin -

That tree interfered with the line of sight from the tee to the green a bit. It was located not much more than halfway between the tee and the green. Since it sat low in a swale, it rarely impacted a ball hit from the tee unless the ball was totally bladed. In all the rounds I played there in the 16-17 years I was a member I don't think I saw a shot hit that tree more than a handful of times.

And yes, that tree finally died of old age several years ago and was torn down.

I have a recurring dream that I am impeded in my swing from the tee with encroaching tree limbs as well as having them directly in my line. I know this is common but there seems to be a variety of interpretations.

I agree on 13, especially given that it's a long iron or hybrid for most players. 


I'll also add that the tree on the par 5 16th is one that I would love to see struck by lightning!   This tree removes almost any reasonable chance for a long hitter to go for this green in two after a good drive.  You're basically forced to lay up and then hit a short iron into the green.  Without this tree I think you'd have people taking a go at the green in 2 and bringing the river, just left of the green, more into play. 


For those that haven't played Blackwolf Run's River Course, it's an extremely tough yet beautiful course, especially in the fall.  The river is about 10' down a vertical wall to the left of this green.
