Tom, could you not argue that 6 at PGA West from the back tees (especially in 1986) is a manmade version of 16 at Cypress Point? I would bet most people would do better on average of they layed-up to the left.

Yes, and I happen to be the one who stuck that hole on the plan, as Mr Dye didn’t have a template for the long par-3 he wanted to include.

And, yes, most people would be better off laying up.  But it’s a pretty poor substitute for the original.

James and Ally have commentated on what I'm trying to get at here.
Would folks play the holes in a different way if they were just a bit longer and played as par-4's?
Would a players mindset change?
What about temptation?
How would a player react on the hole in question and for the rest of the round if they took on a shot they might otherwise not have attempted and it either came off or it failed?
A few yards difference in length but with a different par number on the card.

Doesn't need to have the be longer.. The situation happens all the time when codgers keep playing the tees of their youth. And, yes they play the hole differently.

For sheer chutzpah and difficulty, this one is tough to beat.

Mike-The 4th hole at Shennecossett which plays 208 from the back tee is a Ross “Volcano” hole that instills terror in the faithful and occasional players alike. The only reasonable miss is short and that doesn’t guarantee par let alone four. Pin position at least for me does not mute the difficulty of the hole.

I played Bedford Springs 50 years ago, and I still remember the Volcano hole almost as vividly as any hole that I have played. On our first round, my Dad and I got to the tee and just looked at each other with blank terror.

I'll toss in #4 at Belvedere Golf Club.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Tim,

I need to come up and play there.   Let's make a plan in 2022, thanks.

Number 6 at Hope Valley plays 208 from the back and is at least a club and a half uphill. It is not a pure Volcano because it does not fall off left and right. However, both left and right are close to the course boundaries. Short is not safe because even the front of the green risks your shot rolling 10 to 20 yards down the hill. For you long hitters, over is the best play even though an overcooked chip/putt is likely to lead to a real problem if the pin is middle or front.

I did not put the hole on my list precisely because it is basically hit a great shot or else hole. Think Brora 18 plus.

Here's a favorite, as well.  GIBRALTAR...even the word makes me shudder a bit.

Not sure I can come up with 10 so I'll mention a few I played this year and really liked (don't read "played well" into that):

yardage is from where I played them:

Austin Golf Club #10 - 212yds - plays a bit up hill and drops off right and long

Pine Hills CC, Sheboygan, WI - #7 - 208 over the river to one of the many great greens here

Oakmont CC #8 - 252 - what a beast but like most of Oakmont I still found it fun and interesting

Fox Chapel GC #3 - 195 - could be my favorite Eden template - great setting in the corner of the property, over water to a super cool green

Chicago Golf Club #7 - 207 - The Redan - one of the biggest greens of any redan I've played

All tough holes given the length but all so much more than that IMHO
