 ;D :o

Great addition to this post by Don Mahaffey.  I was particularly taken by his description of the detail that went into the blending and capping at the project he described.

We certainly didn't have that much oversight at Twisted Dune in South Jersey. We had a site that was basically dead flat and pretty much turned it into a quarry that mined out material for the H-tract project in Atlantic City. It was more of a rolling quarry over the 200 plus acres of golf course that was the end product. Our soil analysis worked in reverse to Don's. The casino / tunnel site needed soil that would compact and solidify and our material was perfect for them. They tested it constantly and wanted it full of aggregate and even a little clay. That the majority of our material was almost the consistency of I-5 gravel.  The sand that was pure was either left in place or used to cap the golf course fairways. It also was the mix that Atlantic City CC bought from us to build up all the low lying holes on the back nine.  All in all it worked pretty well but I probably should have done more drainage lines  running along the dunes that were part of the design. Live and learn.

Quite an interesting thread but if you need to cap a whole golf course perhaps you picked the wrong site!

We proposed sand capping a few holes on an old Tillinghast course in the Poconos (they were basically built in a peat bog) but the budget didn’t allow it.  I am having enough trouble getting sand for bunkers right now let alone enough for capping entire fairways  :o

Is Mountaintop GC up in NC sand capped?
I know Wade Hampton has a couple holes, but don't believe the whole course is.

St. Ives claims 40mm which isn't much so I won't but that down.

Also Ballarat GC down in Australia states 35,000 cubic yard of sand capped material imported, placed and shaped was used?  Anyone know if this would qualify?

Adding Hamilton Island GC in Australia. Wow this looks like a great site!
https://www.golfaustralia.com.au/feature/review-hamilton-island-golf-club-559610

Building a golf course on an island was always going to be logistically tricky, and expensive. But the construction and design team became very resourceful to keep the costs down. When it came to sand-capping the course the cost could have blown the building budget.
“The cost to barge in sand from the mainland would have been prohibitive so we made our own sand on the island,” Perrett chuckles. “There were seven crushing machines on the island, and we crushed our own sand. We didn’t waste anything. Rocks the size of Volkswagens were crushed into beautiful sand.”
Hundreds of tons of crushed rock were turned into sand that formed the course’s foundations on which the Bermuda Tifeagle and couch playing surfaces would grow.

Cabot St. Lucia
The St. Lucia property, despite being near the ocean, doesn’t have much of that. Mr. Coore confirmed that they would use a technique called sand capping, which places a layer of sand over the turf to help promote drainage and create the fast and firm conditions golfers prefer.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/todaysinyt/saint-lucia-golf-resort-design.html

Muskoka Bay is sand capped with three feet of sand.
That was the recommendation to ensure the sand cap would drain
It was also placed over the Canadian Shield.

There's 3 holes that play on native sand, the rest was all imported.
The sand was found on site.

It took me 6 weeks of exploring the 800 acre property on foot to find all 250,000 cu.m. of sand
It took us a season just to get all the trees down, build the access roads and sand cap all the holes.
