Storm Arwen, Malik, & Corrie
« on: November 27, 2021, 09:19:36 AM »
I have never seen winds of that speed before, that we had on the East Coast of Scotland last night.

And it seemed like every road in the area was blocked with downed trees.

Hearing that Hazlehead Golf Course has many fallen trees,

Any reports of other courses down the east coast that have been affected?

Ladybank was closed this morning with a lot of debris on the course and a fallen tree on the main driveway. Power cut in the village last night too. It was a wild one!

Fingers crossed for everyone and everything in the areas effected.
Arwen seems to be a storm moving in an unusual direction though, from the due north, so might produce different outcomes to the norm.
Tidal conditions important as well.

It was a bit breezy at Aberdeen…

I played yesterday at Edzell as the storm was coming in. Literally had the course to myself.  I thought the Scots were supposed to be hardy souls!

The name Arwen is believed to be of ancient Welsh origin and means “fair” or “good”.

Wow! I was the last person to play the course before this happened.  It was getting a bit hairy as I played the last few holes and there was already a tree down across the road as I drove away but I hadn’t realised just how bad it had got.

It wasn’t the ideal conditions to see any course for the first time, particularly when it started snowing for the last 4 holes (which from the little I could see by then, looked like they might be the pick of them), but i saw enough to want to go back. I’ll try for a nice calm summer’s evening next time! They probably won’t be thinking this just yet, but losing a few of the trees will be far from the worst thing that could have happened.  My home club, Sherwood Forest, was hit by a tornado a few years ago which took out 700 trees and it hasn’t looked back.  It showed the members just how much better the course could be without them and they’ve taken many more out by choice since.

Storm Arwen: More than 150 trees have fallen around an Aberdeen golf course
By Lauren Taylor
December 1, 2021

There has been extensive damage to Hazlehead golf courses after over 150 trees were uprooted during the storm.

Two of the 18-hole courses have been closed while the full extent of the damage wreaked by Storm Arwen is being assessed.

David Selkirk, director of community leisure operations said: “Storm Arwen has brought down a number of trees surrounding the golf courses, with the MacKenzie Championship Course being particularly badly affected.

As a result, both the MacKenzie Championship and Hazlehead Pines courses will be closed for a period of time whilst the work required is assessed and undertaken.”

Alistair Robertson, managing director of Sport Aberdeen, walked around the fairways to assess the damages and he described the scene as “unbelievable”.

Well for those among us who are god-fearing...it would seem he no more wants to see a course full of trees than the proverbial treehouse does.

https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/sport/golf/3728748/golf-north-east-clubs-remain-closed-after-hundreds-of-trees-damaged-during-storm-arwen/

Forfar was one of the severest hit with the course expected to be closed until next year.

Club manager John Rankin said: “Most of our holes have trees blown over on to fairways or greens.

“We estimate 300 to 400 trees are down or needing to be felled.

“We will need to heavy machinery after we receive a felling licence and insurer permission.

“The course will remain closed until 2022, which is obviously not ideal for member and visitor income.”

So a couple of months after Arwen, the same area has been hit by Storm Malik, and it looks like there is more damage to the same golf courses.

This from Edzell GC

Storm Malik Update
Storm Malik has caused more havoc over both courses. This damage has left an immense amount of debris and in excess of another 100 fallen trees.
The full assessment will be carried out by the greenstaff on Monday. Both courses will remain closed until further notice.

Yet another storm ripped through Aberdeenshire last night.

I have just had power restored after it went off just as the Rams 49ers kicked off  >:(

No reports from the golf courses yet, but the sheer devastation in our local woods around here is unbelievable.

I used to live nearby, on the road between Auchenblae and Fettercairn and we had a lot of ferocious winds in that time, but NOTHING that came close to the destruction seen at Edzell. I can only imagine how terrifying that storm must have been.

I'm familiar with Edzell and only hope that when they replant these woodlands that they do it with a broader range of deciduous and coniferous trees. They have the opportunity (albeit forced upon them) to make good decisions on their tree stock for the generations to come. I suspect that many of the trees blown down here, at Forfar, Hazlehead and others are of the type that one want removed in any case.

Agreed Robin, I have never seen anything like these last few weeks.

I heard something funny today, that Edzell does not own those trees, the Forestry Commission does.

Can't be right, can it?

Brian,
The Forestry Commission no longer exists, but it could be that the land the trees are on might have been leased from themselves back in the day. (Pure supposition from me, in total ignorance of the actual facts, of course, but with a LOT of history with the former FC and their replacement organisation - ‘Forestry and Land Scotland’)
Cheers,
F.
