The Open Championship is Tiger's favorite

Woods explained why this unique type of golf excites him more than any other.

"It allows you to be creative," he said. "Augusta used to be like that. The U.S. Open is obviously not. And the PGA is similar to a U.S. Open setup. We play so much in the States where everything is up in the air. Over here, you get to use the ground as an ally and hit different shots. It is neat to hit bump and runs, and to putt from 50 yards off the green, and to hit 5-irons from 135 yards and run the ball in.

Variety is the spice of life.  He'd quickly tire of playing links courses if they played them every week.

Right!?! Then he would go back to playing PGA tour courses for entertainment. Gotcha!?!

I wish I had the opportunity to "tire" of links courses.

Terry, I'm of the opposite opinion, surprise!

Those who play the anti-thesis needn't wait the full week to be bored.

Well I'll just have to ask a golf writer to ask him the question to see if I'm so off base.

Do you think he's only designing courses for the hallowed "ground game"???

Terry may not be so far off base.  Didn't Tiger also call Firestone one of his favorite courses on tour because "Everything is right there in front of you."

Dale,

in links golf it is also right in front of you as much as at the average country club. I guess the difference is, as Tiger points out, with links you get to eat 'à la carte' and not just stew and dumplings every day.

I agree, Terry. I also think that Tiger enjoys having another opportunity to prove that he can beat these guys wherever there is calligraphy and ropes as Shivas would say. It is just another chance to show the degree of his prowess.

Don't the powers that be at Augusta ban people for criticising it?

I beg to differ, I play nearly all my golf on links and do not bore of the challange, on the other hand I've bored of parklands in a couple of holes.

If you can tire of links golf there is no saving you...it's lost.

I had thought this thread my gain some comments about Tiger's design career. Instead it is about silly remarks by Terry Lavin and Glenn Spencer, so I changed the title and bumped it.  ;D

Tiger is bigger than Augusta and they know it.

Tim Pitner

It's nice to hear Tiger exalt links golf.  It's one thing, though, to admire links golf; it's another to design a course with links characteristics and which might stand aside the classic links courses.  I think Greg Norman and Nick Faldo, two links experts, have experienced this difficulty (btw, is there any news of Faldo's course in County Mayo?).
