I think 1 and 9 at Oakmont are outstanding holes that parallel each other.

I'll go with #7 and #8 at Sand Hills GC.  My first thought was #12 and #13 at Stanford GC, but I looked it up and they aren't parallel.  Next thought was the little fours at Sand Hills.

 2 and 18 Sebonack

1 and 9 at ANGC

1 and 18 Sleepy Hollow
or 2 and 17

Do 2 and 17 at Portsalon qualify? only parallell in their respective elbows

Great, another look where I've been list. ;) :D

Here in Tennessee, I greatly admire the 7th and 8th holes at Sweetens Cove. Both offer strategy off of the tee and devilish card-wrecking greens.

Down in Texas, I think the 9th and 14th at Wolf Point are perhaps that course's strongest (and longest?) holes.

7 & 12 at Mid Pines

I appreciate they are two holes that are not inherently linked in the hole order but are a pair of challenging par 4s well positioned in the routing.

Played today, and I would agree.

4 & 5 at Merion are also good.

  Your nominations?

Isn't this a random concept that doesn't mean anything? It's like Americans with their crazy sports stats. I don't get it.

Sean,

There is architectural interest in how the course is routed. In my experience it’s rare to see two very good holes parallel to each other.

It may be that the lack of trees at Oakmont increases the awareness.

How about 2 & 3 at Hooper. Really thought those holes stood out. You can add #4 to the mix and still be contained since 3 + 4 make up the length of 2.

Personally, I try wherever possible to avoid routing successive holes in an “up and down” fashion. If two holes are laid next to each other, it is better if the routing takes you back round to them.

However, it is often impossible to avoid some feeling of 180 degree turns. Where I really try and draw the line is three in a row…. But even that is evident on some of the world’s best courses. Where this is necessary, it’s best to try and hide the feeling that you are tracking back and forth by varying lengths of holes and by introducing any offset you can.

I often notice on turn of the century courses is that often the par 5s occupy the same portion of the property.

I interpret the question to address parallel holes running in the same direction as opposed consecutive up and back holes.  If so I offer the 6th and 11th at Glens Falls.

Where the terrain is narrow what other choice is there? Hence many a links course, where the strip of terrain between the land and the sea may not be very wide, have holes running parallel to each other.

I'm pretty fond of 8 and 9 at Tara Iti - 9 strokes for that pair is pretty good going in windy conditions.
