Anyone try to cut the corner on 5 today?  Only got to see little bits and pieces of the coverage today...

Jeff,

I saw that on the highlight.  I mean i figured BDC would try something, but yea that was absurd.  Driver - wedge. Too bad Pete ain't around so we could ask him "Did you ever visualize that happening?" ;D

It wasn't even driver- wedge. It was driver and a pitch! Rory also cut the corner. He had driver and about 115 yards or so.
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

P.S.  I know Patrick isn't the first guy to play sans a lid, but he looks odd without one!  ;)

Yes, Dechambeau flew the corner easily to the tune of 417 yds. Had a little flip wedge left and made 3. Rory also cut the corner but didn’t make the fairway. He finished in the rough over the bunkers.

Edit: Oops!! I didn’t flip to the second page to see the several responses to your query. I am ashamed and putting myself into the penalty box.

Bryson cleared it easily.  It seems like one of the safest plays that he could possibly make on that hole.

Bryson had like 70 yards into 5 off the tee.  Rory hit one that landed in and bounced out of the bunker and left a short shot in.  Pretty much everyone went for six in the afternoon, but I can't recall if anyone but Finau actually made it onto the green.  It's just not a big enough kick plate.

I don't like Bryson, but after all the build up, he seemed like a good teammate today.  DJ was probably the best US player on the day, but Finau really stole the afternoon.  Great thing about foursomes is where the shots lie, and a few holes into their morning match, it felt like the US was dead on holes where Rahm was putting for birdie, but really had a chance where Sergio was putting birdie.

Finau was so good with his putter, great to see for a class guy. Also JT made the eagle putt which was great, but he didn't make a lot of putts yesterday overall. Love his energy.  Here are Saturday morning parings below. I like DJ/Morikawa and Xander / Cantlay. Not sure why Finau wasn't put out there. They are sticking to their plan as if it was dynamic at all Finau would be out there.

I am outraged WS doesn't have "proper links" turf, which kept his drive from getting the appropriate firm fast 100 yards + bounce and  roll and reaching the green(and then a cool backstop to contain it, giving him two chances for an ace). Nothing a few hundred more manhole cover drains and sand capping couldn't accomplish.... ;) ;D :o ::)

I find JT’s “energy” more boorish than the crowds. How many different F words does a guy need to drop before he starts acting like an professional?

I was listening to the coverage after the matches and there was plenty of discussion about whether McIlroy would play on Saturday morning after going 0-2 on Friday. Chamblee and Leonard both said that GBI should put him in the lineup but Harrington opted to leave him out. There’s no end to the second guessing in this type of competition.

Agree. Just saw him use his putter to show the putt he made was in the leather, suggesting it should have been conceded. I might expect that in the 6th flight of a club championship but it was bush league in the Ryder Cup.

Also, I played the course a couple of years after it opened and absolutely loved it. Compelling viewing for 5 hours yesterday leads me to consider it among the top moderns.

Best things I've seen so far:

1)  The 12th hole just might be my favorite on the course with 18th as a close second.  Just a neat green and surrounds with so many pin placements and interesting quandaries that appear to be had on the green.
2)  Barney may take offense to this next one, but enjoying the camera shots where it shows the player, with the green and water in the distance.  Not sure what lens setting they're using but the graphic says its a 175 yards to the pin and it maybe looks 80 yards away.  Cool stuff!

Worst thing...

Did they really have to use the bright red material for all the signage and to wrap the stands and towers?  Is using a dull green, to at least try to blend in, really that offensive?

Well that and he was on the wrong end of 75% of Europe's points Day 1-lol

I love the momentum and think that Finau and friends will keep it rolling in the afternoon.  Also beautiful weather and weekend to play there. Offensive alert: More drones please! ;D

I know it is the Ryder Cup with very partisan crowds, but I was brought up never to cheer for bad shots.

I just heard someone yell at Jon Rahm “Go in the weeds as he played out of the bunker”. ::)  The hospitality areas must be busy.

Very few failures on the US team if any. Well worth their lead. In contrast too many out of sorts on the Euro team. It could be over very early in the singles.

They did say this is the most stacked US team ever, (based on the World Golf Rankings), so being up big going into Sunday isn't that surprising.

And if it weren't for Rahm and Sergio that deficit would be far bigger!

P.S.  I wanna know where to find the rule that the Ryder Cup must be held in the MidWest Region (even Kentucky in 2008 basically counts)   You have to go all the way back to last century, 1999 at Brookline when it was not held in the area...

It has been great to watch the pros tackle the course. There seems to be many butt clenching moments that can still leave opportunities for heroic recoveries.

C'mon, man, give us a break.  Our weather sucks like 10 months out of the year.  The other good month is probably May.  September is when both the weather is good, and the golf courses are in primo condition.  I've played Straits a few times in May when the weather has been good, but the course looks like crap.  If you're holding an event in September, the Midwest is the place to be.
