Thoughts on Recent Scotland / Ireland Trip
« on: September 15, 2021, 03:47:46 AM »
After postponing it twice, we finally executed our Scotland / Ireland trip earlier this month, playing 11 rounds in 8 days.   We started in Glasgow, spent one day in St. Andrews, and then flew to Belfast and returned from Dublin.    We played Western Gailes, Troon, Prestwick, Turnberry (36), Kingsbarns, Portstewart, Royal Portrush, Potmarnock, and finished with an epic 36 holes at Royal County Down.   A few items of note:
  • If you can just manage the logistics to get over there, traveling when the courses had few American tourists was great as it felt that we often had the clubs to ourselves.   I've never felt more welcomed at these clubs and we certainly reciprocated by spending lots of money in the pro shops and bars.   If we wanted to play more another 18, we had little issues.   We also got extremely lucky with weather and only had rain on the back nine at Portrush.
  • Six golfers is the maximum number of people you can travel with in one vehicle without a driver.   We had originally planned on drivers, but many of those companies were shut down so it wasn't an option.    The 9-passenger Volkswagen van was perfect and we somehow survived two car rental returns without any additional charges.
  • The COVID testing rules were manageable, albeit confusing.   The pre-departure test has to be no more than 3 days before you arrive (not when you leave), which leaves a small window to take the tests and get them back in time.   The day-2 tests are a joke, as all you have to do is simply order them.   I'm still waiting for my day-2 results.    It was fairly easy to find testing sites for the final test, which is days before departure.
  • While it wasn't easy in the US, we got off relatively easy compared to the UK.   People couldn't leave their counties.   There were military checkpoints in Dublin up until May, for example.
  • We had hoped to play the Old Course on a Saturday, and COVID did mess that up.   Due to COVID rules, they were not pairing twosomes or threesomes with unrelated groups, which ruined our plan as none of us won the lottery 72-hours beforehand.   We tried everything and couldn't make that work.   However, we did play Kingsbarns instead and its hard to find anything that isn't spectacular about Kingsbarns.
  • Only course that didn't live up to my expectations was Western Gailes.    I know its top-100 world, but a flat course with high dunes made some really tough visuals and awkward landing areas (hitting into a 30-yard landing area with high grass and dunes on each side).   Perhaps, I'd like it a lot more a second time and not directly after a long flight.
  • Troon is such an underrated and special Open site.   It probably was the best bunkered golf course we played and the highlight in the middle of the round is so special.    We ended up playing 7,8, and 11 at dusk and it was a lot of fun.   We all tried to hit the tee shot on 11 from the back tee and none of us were able to find our tee shots.
  • I remember every single hole at Turnberry, especially after playing it twice.   After a good but not great opening hole, its just great hole after great hole.   Is there a more dramatic set of par-3s in the world?
  • Prestwick was great, but definitely the quirkiest of them all.   Maybe, one day, I'll figure out how to play that opening tee shot!
  • Flying from Edinburgh to Belfast was easy and there were no COVID checks or anything as you were flying within the UK.  We originally were going to play Macharanish and boat over to northern Ireland, but that plan became problematic without drivers on each side.
  • The town of Portrush is awesome and one of the best golfing towns in Europe.
  • I played Portstewart for the first time and it was awesome.    The back-nine is not a let-down either, although obviously not as great as the first.
  • The new holes at Portrush are really special (Seven and Eight), and replace two former mediocre holes.   8 is an absolute beast into the wind.    4 might be the best par 4 in the Open rotation.
  • If you were going to take an American golfer overseas for one round, I would take them to Potmarnock.   It is a great introduction to links golf without being too quirky for the golfer unused to links golf.   I haven't played a better-conditioned course in the UK / Ireland.   The fescue was a hazard, but manageable.   Balls would land pin-high and be a tough chip coming back.   It also felt most like a US private club.
  • Royal County Down gets better every time you play it.   Its still one of the most penal courses in the world with multiple tough blind tee shots, but you learn how to play it better the second time.   We had a couple of people that improved their scores by ten shots their second round.
  • Staying in Dublin for the final three nights worked out well, albeit you need more time than you think for morning tee times due to traffic.   We could have stayed near RCD for one night, but it would have required changing hotels two more times and the morning drive was only 2 hours.
  • Speaking of hotels, we booked all our rooms after we arrived as most hotels have switched to non-refundable and we didn't want to deal with cancellations if the trip didn't happen.    We had no issues finding good places to stay.
Overall, COVID really didn't do anything to diminish our trip and we all had a blast.

Good summary. You crammed a lot of top golf courses in to that trip and pleasing to hear you didn’t feel too restricted by COVID…

Is there not still a 5 day quarantine required for the UK portion(your first leg) of that trip?

I just returned from Ireland, which was easy.

If vaccinated, think it is just a pre-flight and Day 2 post-flight PCR test, Jeff…

Jeff -

Yes, if entering the UK from an Amber-list country (like the U.S.), all you need is a negative Covid test 72 hours before arriving and then to take a Covid test on Day 2 after you get there. No quarantine is required.

I am just back from 4 weeks in Dornoch (possibly the best 4 weeks of weather I have ever had there ;) ). I had the results of my Day 2 Covid test emailed to me within 24 hours of putting the completed test kit in the mail.

There are like 70 different vendors that do those test kits.   Still waiting on my results.

When I got to the UK about a week before David, I went to a test center at Heathrow the morning after my arrival and had my results in 36 hours.  Note that if you are flying British Airways to the UK, they have a large list of testing options, both mail-in and in person around the country, that offer discounts by using a code the BA will give you.

The self tests I took in Scotland on Day 2 and two days before returning to the U.S. were essentially the same procedures as the test I paid $275 for before heading to Scotland.

I just got back from Ireland this weekend and it was a pretty easy trip. Only needed a vax card to get into Ireland and a 72 hour negative test to get into USA coming back.  USA accepts the antigen test which was 45 Euros and I received the results in about 30 minutes.  I took the test at the airport when I returned my rental car the night before I left. The restaurants in ROI required a vax card and contact info but the ones in NI didn't.

Last week I re-booked an overseas trip for my son and me that got cancelled last year. We booked for summer 2022 and we'll see what shape the world is in at that point.

> Original trip was for us to fly into Inverness via Heathrow
>> We were going to head up north with Durness, Reay and Brora as the headline stops
>> Ended up with British Air vouchers for the full cost of the airfare

> Going to re-book the vouchers did not get us within $900 of the same trip given current prices
>> Ended up boking flights into Dublin and thinking of heading up to Donegal for the week
>> Looking at Cruit Island, Narin & Portnoo, and possibly St Patrick's as the headliners
>> Nothing locked in other than the flight at this point
>> The Dublin flights (connect through Heathrow en route, direct coming back) were almost covered by the vouchers ($100 difference)

Annoyed that the vouchers were not for the trip itself, but rather for the $-value.

I'm assuming that next year won't look much different than this year as far as Covid goes. Any idea how are transfers through Heathrow being handled as far as testing goes?

Great recap - I enjoy reading summaries like this and it definitely helps when considering a similar type of trip.

I'm turning 50 in 2023 - I've been to Scotland twice in recent years so I'm thinking it might be time to play some golf in Ireland for that milestone birthday.  I'll definitely use some of the tips shared here when contemplating an itinerary.

Jim S. -

I am very hopeful next year will look much different, and much better, as far as Covid goes. Could be wishful thinking on my part.

I flew San Francisco-Heathrow-Inverness 5 weeks ago and Inverness-Heathrow-San Francisco this past Saturday. The only time I was asked to show either results of a Covid test or a vaccination certificate was when I was asked for results of a Covid test when leaving San Francisco and then again at Inverness Airport when beginning the trip home. I was not asked to show either when changing planes at Heathrow either going over or coming home.

We contemplated pushing the trip to 2022, but we were concerned that the tee times for 2022 were going to be very difficult, as it was essentially 3-years of demand crammed into one year.    We are glad we didn't wait!

Rob,

If you do the test yourself, its possible you will not invade your own nose the same way someone else would.

Best,
Jon

Jon - I'm very glad that you had such a great trip, and I much enjoyed your recap of the experience.
But such is the power of images that my lasting thought/question is why Louis Oosthuizen would play 11 rounds in 8 days so late in his season! :)

I was in Donegal for three weeks the summer before covid hit (July 2019). I've been trying to get back ever since. Summer 2020 obviously got canceled. And then summer 2021. And I had rescheduled for November 2021, but just rebooked that for July 2022. Barring some disastrous turn of events around covid spread, I'm optimistic that trip will hold. Very much looking forward to seeing the finished St. Patrick's. In my travels, there is no area I would rather golf/visit/explore than Donegal. It's exciting (but not surprising) to see all the praise St. Patrick's is getting.

very difficult to get flights to line up-perhaps different now but I've had zero success trying to make this work without a huge layover, or an unmanageable(too tight)one.
Then you have the problem of limited competition in renting a car which drives price sky high.
and the airport is not particularly near anything but Cruit Island.
Perhaps this will change shortly with the new name architect additions.

I have not. In fact, I didn't even know there was one. Every time I've been to Ireland, I've flown from Boston to Dublin. Get in at about 5am and get out of Dublin before traffic. I usually head north through Belfast before heading northwest. It's really a fun drive, although the drive from Shannon to Donegal is more scenic (in my opinion). It just seems like there are fewer flights to choose some, and it's never lined up for me.

Interesting to note the world’s best access to all golf trip doesn’t get a mention. Clue none of it is more than 2 hours from LHR.

Not disagreeing, but why would it be mentioned on a Scotland/Ireland titled thread?

It looks like it will soon be easier for vaccinated Americans to visit England. It remains to be seen if Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will adopt the same policy.
