The players aren’t demanding.

The difference between the senior amateurs and senior tour pros is like night and day.

I guess you have to define that. Tell that to Robert Funk, who made the cut in two of the last three Senior Ams he played in, beating all kinds of household names in the process.

Can an am win? No. But the top senior ams always have a fighting chance of making the cut against the big boys. And Funk didn't even qualify for the Senior Am this year.

If Funk thinks the difference is "night and day," do you think he makes the cuts he made? Hell no. He knows he can compete with them -- and he did.

The very best senior ams (Top 20 - 30 in the U.S.) all can make the cut at a U.S. Senior Open depending on how their games shape up that week. To me, that's not "night and day."

I would like to know out of the top 20-30 in the US how many work a real job? The one I know who got to around 4th or 5th didn't.

Making the cut while impressive and winning on the Senior tour is "night and day". Other than Jay Sigel how many Senior Am's made the jump and were successful on the Senior tour?

I take the “night and day” comment to be an attitude assessment, not talent related. The men I met were happy to stay in a nearby Holiday Inn and they were looking for the best local pizza joint or different types of local restaurants to visit. They wanted to know where to stretch in the locker room.

Vinny Giles wound up winning, which earned him the record of the longest span between USGA Championships (1972 US Amateur and 2009 Senior Amateur).

In the final he beat his decades-long friend and Walker Cup teammate, John Grace, with a wickedly long and fast putt on the final hole.

Exactly, which is why I quoted the one line from your post.

Kory and Tim are both great friends. Wish that hadn't met in the round of 64, dammit!

McCoy and Elliott  played in the round of 32 with Elliott inning in 19 --I'd have paid to watch that.

Elliott had to make an 18 foot for par on the 18th hole to send it down 19....I think it was only appropriate a match between those two went extra holes.

I didn't realize Elliott had won the British Senior Am this year. Article touches on his friendship with McCoy as well. This would be quite a double as he won 1 up yesterday to make the quarters.

Gene Elliott beat Craig Davis with 5 birdies and an eagle in 14 holes to advance to the final.  He will face Jerry Gunthorpe who had 7 birdies in his defeat of Dave Bunker.  That's some good golf!

That must be for men as Marlene Stewart Streit won the Women's Am in 1956 and the Women's Senior Am in 2003.

Gene Elliott defeated Jerry Gunthorpe 1 up in the championship match.  Gunthorpe was 1 up on the 17th tee only to finish with two bogies to lose the match. OUCH.

Elliott is now the reigning USGA and R & A Senior Amateur champ. Impressive.
