How many double greens exist?
« on: August 21, 2021, 11:05:14 PM »
I can think of eight at the old course, one at Carnoustie, maybe one at North Berwick, one at Trinity Forest and one at Stonebriar in the North Dallas sprawl. Maybe some are escaping my mind. The putting green at Oakmont doesn’t count.
Where else?

Kingston Heath 8/16.
There used to be a maybe 6 feet wide strip of higher mown 'apron' between the two and in the 1970 Australian Open Brian Barnes putted from the 8th green surface back to the 16th - and was penalised 2 shots from playing off the wrong green.
He probably did what every other player in the field would have done - unthinkingly.

I can think of PGA West Nicklaus Tournament (Nicklaus, La Quinta, CA), Desert Dunes (RTJ Jr., Desert Hot Springs, CA) and Goat Hill Park (Oceanside, CA). I think Cimarron in Cathedral City used to have one but on my most recent visit they'd separated it into two.

Cabot Links - 8th/13th.  There is also a double green on the Nest course at Cabot Links which is their new 10 hole par 3 course.

in Oregon
Reserve Vineyards South 3/5 and 11/17 (Reserve Vineyards North also has a triple green 1/8/17)
Langdon Farms 9/18
OGA Tukwila 9/18
Bandon Dunes Sheep Ranch ???    unknown holes     3/16 according to Ian L -thanks
NOTE: Looking at the on-line course map of Sheep Ranch it appears 3/16 is not a double green. Since I haven't been there,
I don't know for sure.

Elsewhere,
Its been a long time since I played the 9/18 double green at Grand Cypress New Course in Orlando (now the Links course)

That’s 3/16 at Sheep Ranch.

3/15 at Baylands in Palo Alto (separately, #14 has 2 greens).

There are a few others at St Andrews.

3/15 on the New, as Sean says.  4/14 on the Jubilee. 9/18 on the Castle.  There are also 3 on the Strathtyrum - 1/17; 2/5 and (I think) 4/11 - and one on the Balgove.

I’m pretty sure there’s at least one, and possibly more, on the Kittocks at Fairmont St Andrews as well.

And I played another one a few weeks ago at Arbroath.

2 & 4 at Loch Lomond were connected by a strip of putting surface around the bunker at the back of both. I don't know if it survived the recent renovations though.

Double greens were common many years ago but with H & S issues clubs have to eliminate them when possible.

I worked on a redo and we lost the 2nd/10th double at Henbury but it was the right thing to do. Saltford 4/10 as well is now gone. I can't think of any in the west country other than Wells has one in front the house.

I think if they butt in at 180 degrees they are ok. I would still do one if the situation was right.

Foxhills used to have both 18th greens co-joined. It was a fad about 25 years ago to have the 9th and 18th greens joined, there must be many of those about.

This was a fad on American courses in the late 1980s and into the 90s, so that marketers could write that the course "has a double green, just like St. Andrews".  Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf must have built a dozen of them.  I don't want to make myself go back through all of them, but one I remember was The Club at Morningside, in Palm Springs, because it made the traffic pattern around the green very awkward for golf carts.

That's one reason I decided I never wanted to build one; the other reason was that I felt that apart from St. Andrews, they are more of a gimmick [for marketing value] than a function of design.  But, I did build one, which has not been mentioned yet; I got outvoted there.  It still annoys me.

There was a massive one at the old Sand Barrens (now Union League National) in New Jersey. Although only two holes met at the stubble, the green was the size of three individual greens. I do not know if it survived the redesign.

Yes, 5 is merged into 10.  That was not part of the plan to start, they were just close together.

Interesting.

I may have mentioned to you at the time but I admired the restraint shown in NOT making 2/16 at The Loop a massive double green. It probably could have worked there but in doing so you lose a bit of separation as well as invite comparison to The Old Course.
