A Timeless Game, by Daniel Wexler
« on: August 17, 2021, 05:22:45 PM »
I am surprised there has been no discussion of Daniel Wexler's book, "A Timeless Game: Some Thoughts On Golf Topics Old and New."  Maybe there has and I missed it? In any event I ordered that book and thought at first the "essays" were too long and really had trouble getting through the one about Jack Nicklaus.  Then recently I picked it up again and read one story and found it be be thorough, engaging and amazingly accurate as he backs his thoughts with numbers and facts.  Maybe just too detailed for today's reader?  In my opinion this is Herbert Warren Wind type stuff.  He examines munis that hosted PGA Tour events, Joe Louis and his influence on golf, the equipment dilemma, his youthful affection, he addresses George Thomas' 3 most famous designs, all within 6 miles of one another and other topics.  Plenty for anyone interested in golf architecture and willing to get a bit more deeply into each subject.  His research is to be admired.  This along, with McKellar Magazine, has elevated golf journalism in a way I seldom find elsewhere.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

I only saw it first mentioned somewhere a couple of days ago.  Is it self-published?  Hard to get the word out if you don't have a long mailing list.

Lynn,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. If you can also post how we can purchase a copy, that would be great. I enjoyed his previous books on lost courses.

I think that you and I might have some attention span issues.  Doak's "Making of Pacific Dunes" has been sitting on my credenza for a few weeks and I am having a hard time getting through the quarterly "The Golfer's Journal" before the new ones arrive.  Golf journalism has definitely taken off since the barriers to publishing have been destroyed.

To my horror, there is a service that people, typically a family member, pays for which sends you a topic to address each week and culminates in a nice book that the buyer receives at the end of the year.  Ours was a "gift" to my wife from our son which is at times burdensome.  So far she has pawned off three topics on me.  The last, "Why Do You Play Golf", became somewhat of an opus for me, nearly 20 pages long (don't worry, I won't send it to you).

Wexler has written other interesting books (on NLEs).  I am trying to diversify how I spend my time away from golf, but I guess I'll order this one.  BTW, it took me a while to finish Walter Isaacson's "Benjamin Franklin", but it is an excellent read.  Franklin's writing on industry, effort, frugality, and the effects of government spending is particularly applicable in our times when $150 might be considered an "affordable" greenfee.

I should have remembered that.  Daniel is awful at shameless self promotion, but great at golf writing.
