Bobby Jones 2030
« on: August 11, 2021, 04:21:48 PM »
A friend mentioned the possibility of Merion, Interlachen, Royal Liverpool and St Andrews hosting the "majors" they held in 1930 , in 2030.to honour Bobby Jones .
Sounds a fantastic idea.
I suppose Merion and Interlachen would have to swap events but the British events could stay the same.
Not knowing much about Interlachen could it host an Amateur?
Any thoughts?

Interlachen is a great club with an excellent course. Yes I think it could hold a US Am. The course might be a bit short but I loved it on my one and only play. It has held a bunch of USGA events.

Heard the USGA has already been out to Interlachen to scoop out the course for 1930. Rumor was they told them it was way too short for a US Open, plus it would have to be super challenging from a logistics standpoint for a modern major.

I suppose it would still be short for a US Amateur as well, but it sure would be a nice way to honor Jones but hosting the event there. Given it's match play the scoring wouldn't matter to much.

Not sure if the 2024 US Am being at Hazeltine might work against them though?

I can second what Pat noted about Interlachen.

I will add, though, that they have retained Andrew Green to help with some renovations with a goal of holding more premier tournaments. It's reasonable to assume they'll follow a similar path that Inverness took recently.

And will the R and A give Royal Liverpool the 2030 open after hosting in 2023?

Best solution would just be to require pre 1930 equipment for that one.
