I've got a short Yorkshire road trip coming up and am giving serious consideration to breaking my Ganton duck on Sunday afternoon, August 8th, taking advantage of the discounted twilight rate after 4pm. Is anybody interested in joining me?


I'm also in the Halifax / Huddersfield area on the 7th if any of the West Riding folks fancy a game.

I managed to join Robin today at Ganton and was very glad I did. Ganton has a fantastic rep but it exceeded my expectations. Bunkers on an epic scale and greens with fabulous borrows. My one complaint is that it could do with being a bit closer to Glasgow.

I haven't seen nearly enough of the great inland courses in the UK to rank it that highly but just let me say, it holds its own against Forfar !

Seriously though, I don't want to say it is all about the greens and bunkers as I thought it was all excellent. There was a sense of scale about the place in terms of the fairway widths and the spacing between holes that I really liked. Not a super wide open modern by any means but neither was it oppressively restrictive. Almost every shot was inviting and challenging. It was excellent.

Robin is playing Woodhall Spa today so I'll be interested to hear how that compares. As a final comment about Ganton, I'm just sorry I couldn't spend more time in the clubhouse as it is charming and full of historical interest. Let me also say the staff were exceptionally friendly. I know it sounds like I've been on the happy pills but it really was top-notch.

There's daylight between Ganton and both Woodall Spa and Swinley in my book.  For me also the best inland course in the UK, though I haven't played Sunningdale.  Ganton also has the best short par 4s anywhere but Elie.

The 3rd made my Best 18 holes in GB&I that I was asked for recently…. Could have almost as easily chosen the 14th.

Occasional GCAer Giles Payne and I had two days at Ganton in 2003, when the ground was as hard and fast as I can remember.  Crazy fun but seriously tricky.  Drives ran for miles but holding greens required incredible judgment.  Agreed about room off the tee.  Rumours of Ganton being a narrow bowling alley are unfair.

I made that point to Robin. If the course had been hard and fiery then it would have been a real challenge to avoid the bunkers. As it was it there had been a very heavy deluge earlier in the day and that had taken the edge of it although the course was remarkably dry considering.

We've been thru this. There is no question Ganton was congested...it was shown on aerials, no getting around it. I am told clearing out efforts have been progressing... thankfully. I said this about 5 times...Ganton was in such good nick that it was a great shame the width of the playing corridors didn't support the great turf. Great course.

James, that's a shame. It was my intention to play up at Ogden, but it was too squally and soggy underfoot, so I got my brother, who lives near Barnsley, out for a game at Tankersley Park. You'll know which course that is, even if you've never played it. It's the interesting looking one on the left side next to the M1 between Sheffield and Barnsley. Had fascinated me for years due to its unusual, post-mining terrain, so this was a good opportunity to check it out. Well worth a play. I'll do a mini-Arble tour in due course. I think this crowd would find things that they like there and its a good spot to break a journey.


We'll catch up at BUDA and for sure, the next time I'm back home in the shire, we'll try and meet up for a game.

I can't speak of what it was like historically, but it did look as though the odd pocket of gorse had been cleared out here and there but not in a wholesale way, or at least not recently. Another thing Robin and I were chatting about was that you weren't faced with a continuous wall of gorse or trees up the sides of the fairways. Perhaps it was like that previously ? If so I can imagine that might have made it appear oppressive, however from gorse/tree line to gorse/tree line on the other side of the fairway there was plenty of room.

That said, the only hole where I thought it was tight was the approach on the 16th. Robin hit a solid drive up the left and was blocked out by a mature tree. Still a cracking hole mind you.

Played Tankersley a few times when I was a teenager with my Dad and his mates. It was very polarising among them -- Dad liked it, but one of his friends was incredibly hostile whenever the idea of going back was suggested. I think the walk was a bit tough for him. It is quite up and down.

Agreed Niall; 16 was the only hole where I thought lack of width detracted from the hole, both on the drive and approach. This is 2017 when I was there.

There were other areas where you could get yourself in to trouble quite easily off the fairway but not to the extent where I though it detracted from the hole and/or challenge.

It is a bit up and down, but then what do you expect in Yorkshire? I put the Strava app on and it measured 471 feet of climbing, which is identical to Kington. This compares to 539 feet at Cleeve Hill, 546 at Welshpool and 719 at Church Stretton. My battery died before finishing JCB, but I reckon that would be around the 500 foot mark.

I love Ganton and it's been too long since I was there.


Sam Krume and I played 36 there a few years ago - in the morning off the yellows and in the afternoon off the whites. It's easier off the longer tees because the fairway bunkers don't come into play for mere mortals!

I have to smile when I read this, as I stayed in the clubhouse far too long and missed my train out of York...  at the time I considered it a WIN-WIN situation    as it had been a long day traveling from Broadway at 4:30 AM, perhaps too far, but Ganton was special, beyond being described as an inland links by my host (when he first invited me for a Home & Home (TX & York) match.


Do I remember correctly a big tree standing guard on 18?
