Fun golf article and GB&I Top-100 Fun Courses listing
« on: August 01, 2021, 04:44:03 PM »
I hope MC and the magazine concerned don't mind it being posted here, it's already posted on social media, but imo this is a very perceptive article that should be of interest to those posting herein.

Thomas,

No problem - and thanks to posting. Although, I suspect it's preaching to the converted!

Thomas, Mike,
I very much like the idea of playing a shot NOT to get on the green. Of course this is really only going to be great fun if the green surrounds are interestingly shaped!
I suspect it is true that the greater number of us mere mortals cannot reach the majority of par4s in two on anything like a consistent basis. If this statement is anywhere close to the truth then it is incumbent on golf architects to make green surrounds fun, interesting and captivating! N'est çe pas!
Mike I will use this argument as IGC proceeds with their rebuilding of various holes!!
Cheers Colin

What I didn't mention when starting this thread was that Mikes excellent article posted above is part of a feature published recently by a UK magazine that also includes this Top-100 GB&I Fun courses listing.

Adam, it’s already been copied and duplicated all over the internet and social media and the matter has been both cross-referenced and indeed referred to in the very first words of my post that opens this thread.

You've been told Dai! And the fact that you helped compile it means you are stealing from yourself!!!!!

When you take this matter to court I'm happy to give a character reference for both parties.

That's actually a really good ranking. Not often I see a list like this and find myself nodding my head. I might have Carne a little higher, but that's nitpicking. And I love seeing Cruit Island in the top 10. And the Old Tom course at Rosapenna at 31.

And a putting green, indeed a Ladies Putting Club course, at number 11.
Splendid list, no bias naturally, full of interesting courses, many in delightful parts of GB&I and likely with more golfing challenge than many might expect prior to playing.

When I was starting my company thirty years ago, and working on a brochure, I thought hard to try and identify words that other designers didn’t use that would make it clear I was different.  Top of the list was “fun” - none of the old texts mention it at all, although Dr MacKenzie surely meant as much by championing “pleasurable excitement “.

People have always played for fun, though some are unwilling to admit it.

I certainly was glad to see Elie, Kilspindie, Crail Balcomie, and Golspie get some kudos as they do not generally make the "best" lists. The one that I was surprised by is Ballybunion Cashen. I have not played it but "fun" not in the descriptions I have read.

No.  No, it doesn't.  Very unlikely that contributors to an article like this retain copyright under their agreement with the publisher.

Why do people thing that copyright infringement is fine?

Adrian,

Not sure why this concept is difficult to understand.

The business that produced the content owns it, which makes sense as they incurred some expense in its creation. If someone wants to share it, they can simply take a minute to type a description and then include a link. People that want to see the article or list can click on the link. When this happens, the host website then has evidence of the interest in the article. Maybe people click on others while they are there. Or, better still, they click on an advertisement. Advertisers hope people do that - that's why they pay the publisher.

Sure, it's more convenient to just cut out and post. But that way, the content producer makes less money and perhaps has less incentive to produce more content like this.

Information that is disseminated on social media often links back to the producer - maybe even earning them more followers.

People have always played for fun, though some are unwilling to admit it.

Not all people. Some people are just plain downers on the course.

It's lovely to celebrate fun.

Imagine someone saying 'When I play golf I don't like to have fun'. Hard to imagine one would want to tee it up with them too often!

Having played 25 of these, I guess I just had too much fun in GB&I.
Some head scratchers though.
Why Narin & Portnoo, but no Portsalon?
Why Carne, but no Enniscrone?

Glad to see West Cornwall on the list. I recommended it here as being something out of the ordinary, and later got lambasted here for it being something out of the ordinary. If you want to play ordinary, stay stateside, you got plenty of ordinary to explore there.

F.

Is it only a 12-holer, or does everyone just skip playing the last 6 quite pedestrian holes? Never been there, but Grieg's book talks about the final 6 holes as I recall.

Defo 12 holes, with an option of playing 6 of them twice if you - really - must play 18…(different layout)
