2021 Western Amateur
« on: July 28, 2021, 03:16:08 PM »
This year's event is at our home club and it started yesterday.
We have two players staying with us for - hopefully - the week as it ends Saturday.

https://thewesternamateur.com/

In a WGA "Con/Am" charity event on Sunday, I caddied for the #2 ranked (was #1) amateur in the world, Pierceson Coody, grandson of Charlie Coody and last year's winner at the event. He is a great kid and was very engaging and relaxed with me and the 3 players in our group. (Yes, I paid HIM (Donation to the WGA) for the privilege of carrying his bag...;-)

Friday/Saturday matches will be streamed on Golf Channel.
Great opportunity for GCA-ers to see Glen View Club:

1. 1897 laid out by Tweedie.
2. 1913 modified by Colt/Ross.
3. 1923 redone by Flynn.
4. 2000 work done by Dave Esler
5. 2012- present ongoing work by Jim Urbina

Playing to a Par 70 @ 6925, the low score through 1.5 days is 65.
(Par 72 for members.)
I was a walking scorer yesterday (and tomorrow).

Heading back up there shortly with my wife to watch the players staying with us play their back 9.
Really fun time.

Looking forward to watching the matches tomorrow -weather looks beautiful. Are you having a Sweet 16 dinner tonight? When we hosted it at Beverly the dinner was really enjoyable. We had Schauffle and DeChambeau at our table. It's impressive to see how Western Am contestants fare in the big leagues.

Was there yesterday. It was quite a field.  Parts "Super Am" and part Collegiate all stars.  Stood at the midpoint of 18... past 310 yards from the tee and still had to watch the balls go by to be followed by wedge shots that landed 3 feet from each other.

"It's a tiny little ball that doesn't even move... how hard could it be?"  I will walk and carry 'til I can't... or look (really) stupid.

Looks like Pierceson (that's some christian name) Coody is up against Karl Vilips in the match play.

Was a lot of hype (and some concern) about Karl in Australia when he was a young kid, went to the US as a young teen, seems he's going well with a scholarship at Stanford.

A pretty incredible round in tournament conditions with greens that have a good amount of slope!

Crazy, and that's from the cool new back tee too! If they were playing the old tee they'd be bouncing it off the clubhouse with 5-woods!

Funny follow-up story...

One of the players staying with us made the first cut to 44. He will be a high school senior in the fall.
He played 36 yesterday and did not make the Sweet 16 cut.

We were leaving the club and I see Pierceson Coody on the putting green.
Small chit-chat, then he asks me to caddy for him for the matches today!! I said he should get a local Glen View caddy. He replied,

"Nah, I liked what we had Sunday. You up for it?"

Of course, I jumped at the chance.

(Sadly), he texted me last night to say his twin brother was staying in town after missing the cut and would be on his bag.

GVC looked terrific last week and by all accounts was a massive success both on the course as well as in support of the Evans. Congratulations to Ian and his fellow members.
