Kyle,
I guess we could put a bell in the landing area so you would not get hit in the head by the group behind you.
I would be amazed if any golf course in Fla has elevation change similar to this

are they par 4's that you play a seven iron from the tee?

I agree with Kyle that three is an interesting hole and making it straight may lessen its uniqueness.  But the distance people hit now makes that second shot more dangerous.

I think Tyler comes from a reverence for the classic but a practical view as well.

We probably need a field trip with Kyle on FaceTime.

Mike,
I agree that #3 is the hole that i will miss the most, it is a good hole and very unique.
The first 7 holes at PH are the weakest part of the course, but #3 is the best of the bunch

as you can see on the map mike posted above #3 tee (#4 in old routing) was right next to #1 green and the hole played straight up the current practice range. Maybe Kyle would like to return the hole to the original design as well.
That hole was originally a par 4

I've always been very fond of both 5 & 6, Dan.  Suspect 5 will shine more now that it won't be so similar to #1.

Love 5 and 6. I think 6 would be awesome as a two tiered fairway and do something about 7.

I will have to show you some day what Jim Wagners plan was for 6 and 7, it is very interesting.

The worst thing you can say about a golf course is that it is boring. In its current state Paxon Hollow is NOT boring.

Which direction, full restoration or bowdlerization of some quirk, moves the needle toward boring?

The only compelling reason cited here is the addition of a range, which is, frankly, a MUST for a municipal golf course*

Kyle,
How about we discuss the new hole designs and how they compare to the current holes. I have posted the topographical drawing at the site below, maybe Mike can post that here as well. Lets compare each hole as it relates to the par of the hole it is replacing. I know you have already refused to consider this bc they are not built yet. But, this is a golf architecture website and you seem to be very familar with the property.

As a militant walker I generally prefer walking up hills during the course of a round with the ball in play as opposed to the ball in pocket. The opener seems dramatic and welcoming and is likely a good compromise to the current situation considering the need for a practice facility.

The second? Well, I’ve definitely a hit a tee shot on the 3rd to that greensite. Was there a need to have the third Par-3 on the front nine still? Seems an odd choice.

Did you ever consider an indoor range with a line of simulators that can double as screen golf during the winter months or at night? Seems a lot more appealing than blowing up 3 very unique and good golf holes for a driving range.

Dan,

What are the approximate lengths of each of the new holes in relation to their replacement counterparts?   Thanks!

I had the pleasure of playing Paxon Hollow again this past weekend after a lapse of probably 30 or so years when I moved (at the time) from Brookhaven to Horsham.

A few notes.

I would disagree with my friend Kyle as I think there is potential for #1 to be a terrific starting hole and all these years later I still don't like #3 at all and I'm a big Quirk guy with a capital Q (although one has to be careful with associating with that letter in these strange times!).    2 looks to be an ok hole and 3 could be improved if I'm reading the topo correctly with an elevated tee to at least alleviate some of the uphill slogginess of the existing hole.

That being said, I'm thinking that what looks to be a reachable par 5 followed by a par three could be a very slow start that will be difficult to remediate back at the starter's shed.

Finally, some great bunker work has been added by Jim Wagner since the last time I played there and it adds considerably to the look and interest of the golf course.   Fun golf course...I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the stretch from 8-18, along with holes 5 and 6.

I was with Mike on that recent round at Paxon and here is how my eyes and iPhone13 camera saw the course:

Mike Cirba has become a vista whore!

Almost always better to walk up a hill with a ball in play than the ball in pocket.

Then again, you and a vehemently disagree on the worst hole Flynn never built: Philmont North’s 9th.

Oh say can you see!!

Yeah...and I used to say Willie Park Jr. never built a bad hole but the 9th at Philmont is strangely similar to the 3ed at Paxon.  ;)
